Storing value of relationships on a blockchain

in #steem6 years ago

Through a few comments with @revisesociology last night he mentioned that Steem Inc should really put together a better how to guide about how all of this works. This was because I mentioned that when I originally got the vote slider, I thought it was a UI change and had no idea it was tied to Steem Power. Even after getting it, I didn't know for quite a while.

The reason I didn't know wasn't because of Steem Ins's failure to inform me, it was my own. Like I mentioned in my post today about why I joined Steem, I and my family weren't in very good shape and I came here with a hail Mary attitude, a last throw of the dice in attempt to balance finances. It didn't work out.

I worked, I even engaged with people and commented and, I even got some support along the way but there was one thing I performed very, very poorly at and I am almost ashamed to admit it. I didn't learn. I came in here with an assumption of how this place worked, what the people were like, what I needed to do. I was desperate yes but more sad than that, I was arrogant. Unknowingly ignorant. Rather than walk into a new place and get the lay of the land and run experiments and learn the environment like I would normally do, I took a cursory look and started posting.

For six months.

I have mentioned before that it took me two months to get 100 followers, almost 6 to reach 500 but my content was able to attract decent followers. Where I failed however was the 'Scream into the void' pattern that the internet has created. Although I have used various platforms, I had never before tried to monetize one and what that takes is, building a network.

I was mostly using Facebook and Instagram and the biggest difference between there and here is that the initial network comes already installed, they are called friends and family. Soon after joining Facebook, I had several hundred followers and then Instagram, the same happened as the platforms are obviously linked. This means that learning the other platforms are much easier (they are also much simpler) because if you or someone else has a question you can always, ask a friend.

Here however, it is a ground up build, foundation is needed, feasibility studies of sorts and a great deal of actual socializing. It is the difference between going to a party filled with friends and, turning up to a party where you know no one. If most people who came in to Steem really did their due diligence on what it takes, they might not carry the same entitlement issues for so long before waking up to themselves. If they did the same thing on other platforms and compared the likelihood for success though, they would probably find (on average) that Steem will return something, almost guaranteed.

How much is not guaranteed.

I can't state how important network is to an account that doesn't have stake. Content of course plays a part in attracting and retaining followers but, it is the ability to build a network structure that can be a support and this generally requires being able to offer something back. Of course, this isn't just through votes but very little content is enough by itself if there is nothing else to prop it up against.

This might sound cold to some but it is not, the building of a network is the building of relationships, making friends, offering a hand to some, pulling ones own weight, providing value in various ways, it is a process of give and take. Building a network is the laying of the cabling to support a community as the networks of individuals overlap with other networks of individuals until there are so many relationship points that it becomes like the sinew of a flexing muscle.

To me, this is why as this place grows, there is going to be so much value in it as the networks built within are not only tied to the person but almost hardwired into the development of the technology itself. This makes us much more physically and emotionally part of the system than any other plug-and-populate platform because rather than just being content sources, we are creative forces that affect the platform direction itself in minor and major ways.

If we look at how seriously people actually take this place and how many arguments are over the smallest trivialities, we can see how emotionally invested active users actually are. When people on Facebook complain, they whinge and whine but, they do nothing of substance. There is no person working on an alternative Facebook front end because they don't like the latest UI change, there is no one coding an algorithm to better support content producers because they don't like the way Facebook manages it.

There is no one because, it isn't possible on a centralized platform.

I don't think people have fully grasped the potential of what this means in our future and, how much it is going to support ordinary people in the world, just like us. It won't just be Steem of course, there will be many more iterations but, like I mentioned to someone today. New industries are going to be born, this is school.

I came in blind and although there are many who would rightfully argue that I am still blind, I am nowhere near as ignorant as I once was about many things that I was arrogantly thought I knew something about. Each day through my words, the words of others, the conversations in chats, the shared updates, the perspectives of life I get from the diverse group that make up the community, I am learning. I wish I had started earlier but, I am not planning on slowing down anytime soon.

You might not understand this, you might not agree and, you might be absolutely right. But, you also don't have the experience I have nor been privy to the same informational view as me which means, we are always going to have different perspectives on life as we each have a different window to look in and look out from. The difference between us is what gives our network value and the Steem community, just like blockchains, store masses of value. The Steem blockchain is not tracking transactions, it is tracking the interactions of our relationships to each other.

Both a scary and incredible thought.

So far I have met amazing people from different spheres who have contributed in some way to my journey on steemit. Here, unlike some other platform the noise is tuned down, and you find people who are genuinely interested in your thoughts. I have really put aside making money from this platform for now. I feel safe here, the people I meet her make me feel safe. I don't know how long this will last, but I hope it does last for a while

It is interesting that people seem to feel safer here than other places. I think it is because many are lookng to earn something from their account, there is less trolling and anger.

Precisely. Having to evade all that negative energy that dominate other social media platforms is a big relief.

I still think there should be better “getting started” material. And one of the things they should emphasize is the importance of growing ones community on here through effort not required on centralized social media platforms.

Oh, I agree. I put forward some condenser tweaks through utopian a year or so ago that I am pretty sure would have not only made the beginning easier for most people, it would have cut own some of the spam and f4f / v4v nonsense.

The sixth post I published on Steem.

I was still busy experimenting and all was super eclectic, much more than my regular feed but that was a golden rule I knew.

After 10 days I think I was more like, wtf is this.....

My profile lost its virginity because of shadowbot resteems in those first few days. 😂

But yeah, I had already grasped curation and even discovered that f4f/v4v thing. Which little later I would write about it didn’t add value.

“Tribe building” is what it’s at and has been ever since days of “you built it, they come” are over (around 2003 when optimizing for Google and MSN search became a thing).

And now, with always more players vying for that same limited pool, on ever more dApps, social capital will become even more a thing.

But... be wary for the “gurus”. Everyone has an agenda. Most revolve around .self.

Social media specialist Gary V. says it takes 18 months. 18 Months to build sufficient profile, to grow your tribe, to actually start considering revenue.

In blogging that may also include sufficient traffic to add up affiliate revenue. And decent beginner SEO knowledge.

Steem isn’t different. It has its own specifics but it’s all about the same still: don’t focus on $$$ but focus on building your tribe. That will eventually lead to $$$.

Do the opposite and you will give up before you achieved anything to write home about.

I really love it when engagement with the community pays off. There are people who engage JUST for the profit it may bring, but I know many who just enjoy engaging, and I hope that the less sincere will be seen for what they are, which is not to say that they are BAD. I think overall it works, it just kind of pushes you to spread yourself thin a lot of times.

and I hope that the less sincere will be seen for what they are, which is not to say that they are BAD.

I think 'for the money' can rarely hold up long-term as either they will be discovered or, just lose motivation. I do understand the attempt but it is rarely going to satisfy their needs for long.

I hope you are right. I can be rather cynical as far as how properly designed any system is to encourage good behavior. So I try not to focus on it too much because I can easily be optimistic about humanity when we look at the larger picture and there are enough people looking to really work together.

You are right. You must be right!

This is a really well written and insightful post. I think you have really developed a good understanding of what it takes to be successful on a platform such as Steemit. I know I have learned something from reading your post and can definitely relate how some of my own experiences really come back to needing to build up a good network, build community and interact more. I have posted for year on other social platforms, it can be easy to make followers but they real value comes from relationships built over time and the ones that have followed me for years also count on me to follow and keep up with what they are doing. Thanks for sharing.

This place is all about relationships. The more friends you have and I mean proper friends then the stronger you are. We all add some sort of value somewhere and when it is combined together we are a proper team.

500 in 6 months is OK, about the same as me... I have been on for just over 6 months.

However 30-40 might be a better number. If we could 'force' the followers off, it might give us a better indication what the number truly is.

The last six months have seen the follower rate drop quite a lot. price is down ;)

If it goes down to single figures again, I can become an instant Orca without breaking the bank... how about that? Would you...

I would do my best. I would need $2500 at 10c to become an orca. Things are tight so I would be forced to sell my pudge on the street but, it would be worth it.

The dedication and belief! I would do the same.. except the pudge bit..

I like the idea of forcing out non-contributors who "follow" but never comment and, at best, only post re-steems. Why do they even bother to follow anyone?

I think it is an economic model for resteemers. They use them as 'proof' that it works. It doesn't.

Do you think the presence of @steem-ua will help beginners focus on a goal that will make learning the important parts of Steemit first? It sounds like it may create a more serious performance focused goal to work towards.

I certainly understand the feeling of floundering around in the beginning with no clue of what was expected or what goals were.

I am hoping it will do that plus, encourage powering up to delegate. The reason is not just the locking of Steem away from the exchanges, it is that once people get into the habit of powering up they start to feel more invested in the platform and take it more seriously. It doesn't take much.

I am hoping they fork you out in HF20
