Witness overview page

in #steem6 years ago

This is just an idea that has been in my head for about a million years. I once asked a developer friend if they were interested in developing it but they had another large project going on at the time and still.

So, basically it is a page where there is an overview of witnesses in a standardized form (to some degree) so that the average users can get a view of what individual witnesses are doing and their current thoughts on the Steem platform and direction they are trying to take it.

Currently, it is very difficult to keep track of what witnesses are doing and, it is very hard for witnesses to keep providing updates. The goal of this is to make it easier for witnesses to more easily present their information and for users to more easily access it. It doesn't have to be slick or glamorous but a tile layout would suffice.

What I am thinking is:

  • Access to the witness page for witnesses is gained through Steemconnect to verify that the one who is editing the information is indeed the witness.

  • Witnesses are given sections with a standardized basic layout with prompts for each relevant section plus the ability to free write if they choose.

  • There is an indicator for "last updated"

  • There is a link to the page available in the 'Vote for witnesses' section of Steemit.com at least, and other UIs if they choose

  • Ranked in order of position with ability to see supporting vests

  • Links to latest posts or pinned posts of the witness that the witness feels are relevant to voters.

What this will do is bring all witness basic information into the same portal and allow users to better understand and compare the perspectives and philosophies of witnesses without having to chase each one across Steem time and space and a myriad comments. Having a basic view provided that is easily updateable by witnesses as they change or introduce new projects means that the information can remain more relevant at all times.

This should also mean that the testing processes that @steemitblog mentioned could also be easily displayed and if there is some rough outline of presentation style suggested, it creates a more uniform approach for users to compare against and lower the barriers of knowledge required to do so. It means that witnesses could use it as a resource to develop their own rough testing standards among the group and also as a postmortem tool in cases where steps pledged may have been missed.

Additional factor for witnesses.

Since it would require Steemconnect to log in and prove witness status, there is the possibility for a witness only page that can be updated on the fly in times of crisis to disseminate information effectively and efficiently to those who need it. In the last month or so, we have had two massive cases where a page that could address witnesses directly with corrective steps would have come in very handy to ensure that all witnesses were on the same page so to speak in getting their nodes back up and running rather than feeling left out, as some expressed.

This is just a basic idea at this stage and I do not have the technical skills to develop it but I figure that if I throw the idea out there, a developer could potentially run with it and perhaps get support through @utopian-io for the development.

I think that having more witness transparency and easier access to information would result in more users at all levels taking a more active role in the direction of the platform. I think that it will also give more responsibility to the witnesses but make it easier for them to keep their information up to date and relevant.

Anyone interested?

This is a great idea. I think we could put this information inside the account JSON Metadata. @therealwolf experimented with a witness field that stores important data. So this app could very well just parse that field in a standardized way. It could display servers and their status, could contain a bio that can be updated and can add more and more data when we need it later.

That is the idea and I think once it is there and updated by witnesses, maintenance is relatively easy. As said though, I don't have the skills for it but I am pretty sure you guys can find someone who does and is willing :)

I like the last updated option! I find it the witness tread a bit too static and outdated most of the time.

Well @tarazkp. In my case, I get most of the relevant info about witnesses through the page of https://steemian.info/witnesses made by @drakos. And in your case, you may also want to check here to obtain additional info specifically about the witnesses that you are currently supporting. :)

Now, according your idea and proposal on this post, I think you could be interested in contact to @asbear who already developed ages ago the webpage http://steeme.com/witness which seems to me like half way to the website that you are looking for. (If you click on the 'magnifying glass' of course) ;)

On other hand, for this project, I would poke you and anyone else to contact @elviento. Who I have the hunch that through a good offer and sweet declaration of love, he could be delighted to develop the webpage that you'd want to see built with more exquisite and entertaining ways to interact with the website to squeeze the desired info in less time and fewer clicks.

Cheers!! :)

I would like more of a view than that though especially considering that there is a push for witness testing standards of some kind to be developed. I would also prefer some way to present it in a standard form. I was thinking that maybe a questionnaire of relevant topics could be used as prompts for witnesses to answer.

Did you click on the magnifying glass icon on @asbear's website?

Yes. This is data that is pulled. It goes half way. I am hoping for something that the witnesses will update themselves and add their personal views on things.

Yep! It actually goes half way. That's why I thought @asbear could develop the missing tidbits in no time.

I guess english isn't his native language, but I think he can understand english pretty well. Who knows? Perhaps he could be interested in create the website you are proposing. It would only takes approach him seriously and directly. With some luck he even could see and notice these mentions too. :)

Hi Taraz. A good idea that can be useful as I still have spare votes and honestly don't know who should have them. I have looked up a few but this would save time.

This would be a great initiative and very relevant given the move to make witnesses more accountable after the last Hard Fork. While I have made a number of additional votes since then, I still have a number of votes available. The fact that I have not seen initiatives from other makes a tool like these even more desirable. It seems that some are also interested in the comments so we may be seeing it soon which is great!

Would be great to see someone run with it. If I was more technical I would be making so many tools. Misspent childhood :)

A very good idea in my opinion will be applied to make the website professional and will facilitate access to information more accurately and faster. Greetings

That's a great idea! I don't follow many witnesses but I like @dragosroua witness update which tells us exactly what he's doing, and his thoughts on important Steem updates.

Any application that serves to organize the search for information will always be of benefit. In fact, being able to have witnesses in the same place and from there be able to make readings, analysis and see their evolution, can be summed up in time gain, an important factor in these moments - making the most of time. I leave you a great greeting and a happy weekend.
Good vibe.

This is a good idea I think a single page application that acts like status pages similar to the popular services is a very good idea. Just experimented here : https://steemwitness.statuspage.io/

can't see the page.

Realized that they are asking for payment ;-) the attached screen shot is roughly how the page looks like by default. Users can subscribe to alerts if they wish. All the major platforms uses similar model to show the status of their systems (KPI). I think, we need a similar system, ie like the one you mentioned but need to have few minimum fields which will make the over status clearly available in a single glance.

This sounds really good, as it is often difficult to decide on votes and I usually have to rely on friends or one-off glimpses of witnesses with occasional checks on them, meaning I only replace a few, I didn't even realise 2 of the witnesses I voted for were offline, so definately a good idea!

perhaps it could come with an alert feature to show disabled witnesses more easily.
