How to claim Steem accounts by spending your Resource Credits

in #steem6 years ago

Hardfork 20 changed the way we create new accounts on the Steem blockchain, and we can no longer create almost free accounts for our friends and family by delegating Steem Power to them. Instead we must either pay the flat 3 STEEM fee for claiming a single account, or use Resource Credits to claim a free account.

In this post we will be looking at the last option, and how users can spend their Resource Credits on claiming Steem accounts. Users with a lot of Steem Power tends to have a lot more than they use for posting and voting anyway (for example, I had enough to make 700+ posts, which is a lot more than I need), so spending them on claiming accounts might be a good option to prevent it from being stuck at 100 %.

If you are unsure how much many posts, upvotes and transactions you can do with your RCs, then check out the guide on how to find out.

How much does it cost to claim an account?

If you want to claim a free account, it’s going to cost you 8.79MM RC mana right now. The price is fluid and depends on how many people try to claim accounts, so it will dip and rise as the demand changes. Almost 9 trillion RC mana is a lot, and I think you might need around 4,500 Steem Power to be able to claim a free account right now.

If you don’t have enough RCs, then you will have to pay a 3 STEEM fee to get an account claim. Alternatively you can get someone else to claim an account on your behalf, and then give it to the person you want to recruit.

How to claim accounts

There are not too many different options around if you want to claim accounts right now, but one of them is over at Steeminvite. You can log in to the website with your account name and your Posting Key, and from there see the current price of claiming an account, and how many accounts you can potentially claim.

If you have enough RCs to claim an account, then just click the button. This part requires your Active Key. You should be very skeptical of giving this key away, but according to the creator of Steeminvite, the Active Key never leaves your browser, but you should of course make up your own mind about taking this risk or not.

If you go on, then it's a very simple process; just paste in your Active Key and you claim a single free account. This account claim in now permanently tied to your account, and you can either choose to send it to someone, or hang on to it.

Why bother to claim accounts?

The great thing about claiming accounts is that the claim is tied to your account permanently, but your RCs will begin to regenerate right away, so this is a nice way to prevent “wasting” RCs by being stuck at 100 %. While it might not make sense to create a lot of accounts just for the sake of it, it might be nice to have a few ready to go if you meet some people who are interested in joining the Steem blockchain.

I can only claim a single account (and I spend around 80 % of my Resource Credits on that) before I need to recharge, so I will likely do this every 5 days for a few weeks in order to have a handful of invites ready to go if I ever need them.

Thanks for stopping by!

Have you claimed any free accounts yet?

This means that the whales got even more powerful???
I don't know if it can be good to give more control in the hands of a few powerfuls...
Pardon my sarcasm....

How will this make whales more powerful? All it means is that they are able to create accounts to give away. These free accounts comes with 0 Steem and 0 Steem Power, so there's really nothing to gain from this.

Well is it possible to claim the accounts and sell them latter when demand is high...???
e.g.
If I am a greedy shark, I would continue claiming accounts and wait for steem to reach may be 20$ and then start selling...

Or maybe today I am in a negative mood!!!That's why I am thinking like this...
PS: Steem is at 2nd position at Netcoins ...So
Cheers

Ah, I see your point. I'm not sure if it will be a big problem though, since it seems that there is a big supply of free accounts, so I'm not sure if they will ever really be worth anything.
I hope we see a community where these are generally given away instead of being sold, but who knows..

That kind of community is the goal man...Apart from a few bad fishes most of the whales are quite courteous...

Yep, we should aim to become that community. Thanks for giving me a different perspective on the accounts created by RCs though; I hadn't really given much thought into this problem you are describing. I still hope you are wrong of course, but we will see what happens if Steem goes up in price again.

Really nice information! I tried out the process and it worked well. It is nice to go through it for a secondary account so you know what to expect in case you make one for a friend. Here's the first post on the new account I just made: Introduction

Yep, it's definitely nice to know how to do it, so you're ready to go if you can persuade any friends or family to join.

Finally more information about the subject!! thanks @valth !! i was wondering how much sp was needed to create one of these free accounts

I'm glad you liked it. Keep in mind that the RC needed will constantly change, so the SP needed will also be fluid.
