A guide to Steem for new Steemians (2)

This is part two in my guide for new Steemians, my goal is to bond more people to this great community and platform...

Posting

As you know by now Steemit is all about the posting and curating of good content. But what is the definition of good (or quality) content.
That's of course different for everybody but my definition is content you write with enthousiasm and from which you think other Steemians like to read for different reasons which can be:

  • Entertaining nature
  • Eductional nature
  • Helping / supporting nature
  • Sharing experience nature

But most of all it must contribute to something, if you feel you did your best and were writing something you really want to share, then for me you can consider it quality content.

You do see a lot of posts from which you really can ask what's the meaning of it, mostly it is because of the fact people do want to be rewarded without really having topic's to write about...
Take it from me, don't do that. People are going to see that as spamming and won't reward you for it. Even worse, when you then do produce a great posts, they won't take notice of it.
So be true to yourself and write about anything you really have something to say about, and again that can be anything.

If you have difficulties writing, or you are out of inspiration there are a lot of contests and challenges you can participate. It can give you inspiration or it is just fun to do.

just look at the hashtag #contest and you will find a lot of contests

A lot of new steemians do think they have to produce content no matter what, but that is not the case. If you don't have any inspiration you can read posts from other steemians and comment on them. That's a good thing for two reasons:

  • You get to know people by reading their posts and bond this way to create a following.
  • When you comment and upvote you are able to receive curration awards...

Following

When you start with Steemit you don't have any followers. But that will change after you posted one or two posts,. You will problaby get some followers who comment (or not) on your posts.
It doesnt have to mean they are really interested in your posts, a lot of steemian accounts will follow a lot of people without real engagement trying to find the chicken with the golden egg :) But of course it is about creating a good following, that's the power of Steemit, engagement of people.

When you look at my followers for instance, Steemit says 783, and that are (I think) a lot of followers. But don't let it fool you by the numbers because a little percentage only really follow's me by reading my posts, commenting etc. So my advise is not to stare at the amount of followers, but it is more important to have 'some' followers which you really interact with, you will see it for your self eventually..

The same goes for the persons you are following yourself. Of course it will look cool if you follow 2000 people, but be aware of the fact that all those people will show up in your feed (your view with posts of people you are following) and that you aren't able to look at all those posts. It is better to follow just those people you are really following and interacting with, and of course perhaps some 'big steemians' like @exyle (Dutchie) to follow news about the blockchain.

Curation groups

Perhaps you have already read a bit about it, or even are participating, but there are a lot of curation groups outthere with often a group on Discord

Discord is a chat platform where you can join groups (servers) or create your own server.

Often these groups were founded with the vision of asuring content quality and supporting it's members. For example they often have a post-promotion channel where you can 'drop' your posts. And in return of that you have to upvote and comment one of the other posts in the channel. That way it is (almost) asured that everyone get's some recognition for their posts and supporting eachother. Besides that they often have some rules about posting that it has to meet a certain level.

There are also groups with these requirements but with additional options to get more rewarded for your posts. They sometimes ask a entrancefee to participate but in return the upvotes are a bit higher.

Or the work in TIERS, which you can see as levels. @qurator works with tiers for instance, they have a great post which explains exactly the use and benefits of tiers. You can find the post here

There are many curating groups and accounts, these are just a few

Look at the posts at those accounts to see what the requirements are for each..

Curation trails
You can compare a curationtrail the best with a kind of mailinglist. Everone in that list upvotes all the posts from anyone in that list. So if you for instance are member of a curationtrail with 100 people, you post a post about something.. When it is posted 100 accounts (including your own) will upvote your post. So that is a kind of a insured reward for your posts...

So they can be great, but don't calculate yourself already richt because a lot of people have a autovote (required) on those trails from only 0.5 % upvote. And as you probably remember from the first post , when somebody has low Steempower that vote isn't worth a lot.

Steemauto is a tool you can use to automate voting, I will discuss this later on

An example of some curation trails

Well, I am almost at the end of this second post but want to give just again a little advise.
There are a lot of resteem accounts, the only thing those accounts do is resteeming (sharing) other posts. It you follow a lot of these accounts you only see their resteem posts in your feed, I think it's a waste of your feed, so limit the following of these accounts... just my two cents...

This post is part of a serie, the older posts you can find here

Have a great day

Helpful information You are our Teacher to guide Steem Network

haha thank you, I'm doing my best to get people on board of this great platform !!
