WW1 Airplane, Morane-Saulnier - The First True Fighter!
The Morane-Saulnier is one of the most iconic airplanes ever.
In 1913 Roland Garros the famous French pilot crossed the Med non-stop in 7 hours 53 minutes carrying only 8 hours of fuel, this was only 4 years after Louis Bleriot had crossed the English Channel for the first time.
During WW1 Roland Garros became the first pilot to fit deflectors to his Morane-Saulnier propeller, thus enabling him to fire through it. In April 1915 he shot down 3 German planes which marked the first use of firing through the prop.
It is often considered the worlds first true fighter airplane.
Roland Garros is immortalized in having France's premier tennis stadium named after him. Coincidentally as I post this the French Open Tennis Finals are about to start at Roland Garros.
