Terror vs. Fear
The book of Ecclesiastes begins with a statement "Vanity of vanities is all vanity" and concludes with the phrase "The end of all speech heard is this: fear God and keep his commandments; because this is the whole of man "
This kind of fear of God must be healthy; a fear that expresses in a feeling of deep reverence towards the Creator, and it is a healthy fear of not displeasing him for the appreciation we feel toward him, such as the appreciation a son feels toward his father.
On the other hand, fearing God is not a stunned and overwhelming feeling that provokes mental rigidity or smallness of spirit. The fear of God leads us to discover that only the Lord is worthy, he is the Supreme Judge, the Almighty, King of kings, Lord of lords, he is simply and we are not.
Isaiah 64: 8 quotes: Now therefore, Jehovah, you are our father; we mud, and you the one who formed us; so it is we who are the work of your hands.
In the book of Exodus we see how God, after having liberated his people from slavery in Egypt, revealed himself to them in a majestic way, because he wanted to create in them a permanent impression, an indelible sensation of His majesty and power. God wanted to teach His people to fear Him, to serve and obey Him with fear and reverence, and to turn away from sin.
Ex 19:16 And it came to pass on the third day, when the morning was come, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the sound of a loud trumpet; and all the people who were in the camp shuddered.
God's desire was to cause an awakening of their conscience to know that he was a living God, and it is the same as it is in the present; The cause through the salvation and regeneration of our spirit that we have a conscience that recognizes and accepts that he lives in our being and a conscience that accepts that he is Lord and master of our souls, as the spirit of reality vivifies a conscience that recognizes that God is constantly looking at everything we think, say and do and implant a conscious and permanent desire to please him in everything we do and not to offend him, in simple words an acknowledgment that we are creatures and he is God and that he is worthy to be feared and revered.
The fear of God should lead us to obey His name, not terror. Thank you for sharing this valuable teaching.
