STEEMCHURCH - Tolerance Among Christians

in #steemchurch6 years ago

Dear All,

So, something got me thinking after listening to this particular sermon on Religious Tolerance. I still don't get why most believers feel so superior to others just because they attend a particular Christian denomination. I don't know if this is a common act all over the world, but I know it's very common in Africa. Sometimes, I wonder why we are fighting over which denomination is the best. We intend to rubbish other believers who do not practice the same rituals/beliefs as we do. Severally, I've seen Christians condemning a fellow believer just because he/she feels his a better Christian. Some will go as far as calling people from other churches sinners. The question is, what is the fuss about? Why are we fighting over supremacy? Who gave us the right to condemn other believers? Let me remind us that the word Christianity was first used in Antioch when the people saw that the apostles were behaving like Christ. The people called them Christians which means Christ Like, but these days all we get is a different ball game where people are being judged by the church they attend.

One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.
3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.
4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.
Romans 14:2-4 NIV

The Catholics believe that the Pentecostals are not heaven candidates and most times, the Catholics would choose any of the Orthodox churches over the Pentecostals. On the other hand, the Pentecostals, in general, believes that the Catholics are far from it. The Catholics are sometimes called sinners and idol worshipers. Yet again, there is a serious rift between the different Pentecostal churches where only a few are regarded to be 'genuine' and true followers of Christ while the rest are waste of time. I have heard some members of the Catholic faith saying they can never attend any of the Pentecostal churches, and I have also heard people from the Pentecostal Faith saying the same thing about the Catholic church or other 'smaller' Pentecostal churches. What baffles me the most is, where is Christ in all of these? The ultimate for most believers is the fact that believer A attends the same church so, that is all that matters. No one cares about the level of your spirituality.

I remember a friend of mine came crying to me. According to her, the pastor of her church has refused to accept her marriage proposal from a guy who is of the Catholic faith. According to her pastor, no Roman Catholic is a born again. I was marveled at such utterance and I kept asking myself what is going on in Christendom. Why are we fighting each other as our whole life depends on it? Why can't we tolerate & accept each other? The bible says we should look unto Jesus as the author & finisher of our faith. Christ is all that matters here. Let me also remind us that there is no church in heaven. We will not be asked which church we attended on the last day rather we will answer questions according to our deeds here on earth. The church you attend does not give you an automatic ticket to heaven, but only your Salvation in Christ Jesus does that. Yes, I know the church does play a role in molding one's life, but it is never a ticket to heaven. Hence, let us not be too quick to condemn others. We are one body in Christ and one big family. We are brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus. The greatest commandment is love. This means loving everyone no matter who they are. It means loving all humans no matter their religion then how much more those of the same religion. This fight is not worth it because there is no battle for supremacy here. This is a wake-up call to all Christians all over the world. Aren't we shifting from the focus? There is no need for this fight, let's hold tight to Christ and his teachings that is all that matters.

In Conclusion

As believers, we have a common goal which is taking the gospel of the Lord to the ends of the earth. This is a mission all believers must take very seriously, and one of the ways we can achieve this goal is by coming together as a body and not by fighting each other. The early Christians were able to capture the world because they were united in Christ. The love for the lost soul was all that mattered to them. There was no church at that time yet they came together as one body in Christ. Jesus truly cares for all!!
