Dear Brothers and Friends!

The scene described in Leviticus 4: 27-31 gives us an overview of the atonement process.

"And if any person of the people of the land sin out of ignorance, doing against any of the commandments of the Lord, that which should not be done, and so be guilty, Or if the sin that he committed was notified, then he will bring for his offer a goat without blemish, for his sin that he committed, and put his hand on the head of the offering of the sin offering, and kill it in the place of the burnt offering, then the priest with his finger will take his blood, and put it on the tips of the altar of holocaust, and all the rest of his blood will pour to the base of the altar, and will remove all the fat, as the fat of the peaceful sacrifice is removed, and the priest will burn it on the altar, for a sweet smell Lord: And the priest shall make atonement for him, and sin shall be forgiven him "(Leviticus 4: 27-31)

Early in the morning an Israelite gets up and leaves his tent; He goes to the place where his flock is and chooses a perfect sheep. He is despondent and worried, anguish takes over his heart. He sinned and knows that he must die because of that, after all, "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6: 23).

This afflicted man takes the animal to the center of the camp, where the Tabernacle is, the house of God. He goes by the side of about 2.5 meters of white linen that highlights the purity and holiness of God, which contrasts with his impure and sinful life.

Perhaps the best decision for a sinner like him would be to flee from the place where the Holy God dwells, but he knows that he can not flee from his holy presence (Psalm 139: 7). He walks towards the Door, which represents Jesus Himself, for He Himself said: "I am the door, he who enters through me will be saved" (John 10: 9). He knows that only there could he find forgiveness.

Upon entering the atrium, the Priest approaches him and leads him to the Holocaust Altar. On the way the man talks to the priest:

Is it true that this animal must die?

Yes, indeed, for "without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness [remission of sins]" (Hebrews 9:22).

But that little animal is innocent! He did no harm to deserve that...

That is the question! A guilty person could not take the place of another culprit. Because you sinned and lost the right to life, you must die, unless someone innocent dies in your place.

  • But how does he take my fault?

  • First, you must place your hand on the head of the lamb. By doing this, you acknowledge that you are guilty and that the animal is innocent. God sees this act as your identification with the lamb and the lamb with you. His guilt is transferred to the innocent animal and he is made guilty. When he is sacrificed on the altar, you are considered free and innocent as was the animal!

It was not an easy scene to see. That man kept his hand on the animal's head while the priest immolated it. The blood was shed and the animal's life was extinguished before his eyes. However, after that moment, he sighs in relief, for God assures that "he will be forgiven" (Leviticus 4: 31). "I'm free!" The man shouts.

When the priest was going to start another sacrifice that man has and asks:

  • What happens if I sin again tomorrow? What if next week I sin again?
  • You will need to bring another animal for sacrifice. My work here never ends ...

Those sacrifices were only a shadow of the perfect and definitive sacrifice that Jesus, the Lamb of God, would make on the cross.

When someone believes in Jesus and confesses Him as Lord (Romans 10: 9-10) he is symbolically placing his hand on the head of the Lamb of God and identifying with Him. In His death, the price for our sins has been fully paid and our fully paid debt. That's why we received his justice and innocence. The Bible confirms this in 2 Corinthians 5:21:

"He who knew no sin made him sin for us, that we might receive in him the righteousness of God." (NIV)

In bearing our sin, Jesus also endured the full consequence of sin in our place. He was our perfect substitute!

"Because you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ who, being rich, has become poor because of you, so that through your poverty you may become rich." (2 Corinthians 8: 9)

Jesus Christ was the only person capable of carrying out the atonement for all humanity, thanks to his atonement we have hope in obtaining eternal life
Very good reflection brother @emiliocabrera

I was always intrigued with some rites of the old testament, everything was a shadow of what was coming for the future, the savior Jesus took our place and forgave us, it is something for which we are grateful. Greeting my friend.

Excellent explanation Brother EC, we no longer offer animal sacrifices! The animal sacrifices have ended, because Jesus Christ was the last sacrifice. John the Baptist recognized this when he saw Jesus for the first time. "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).

Thanks to our Lord Jesus for giving us that privilege of being saved, to break that old covenant, because only he could do it and he did it and with that Light gave us and that lus is the one that guides us and illuminates the path that leads to the father . Thank you Christ for So Much Love.

Thank God for his mercy and die for me but where would I be today?

Great words @emilocabrera. When i was reading through the book of leviticus, i was intrigued by this sacrificies people made for atonement of sin. And i asked myself this question "would i have been able to meet up"? Christ loved us and He knew that at a long run that people wouldn't have been able to meet up with all of this sacrifices and it could also render people wretched. And so He gave His only son, no need for sacrifice or atonement with a lamb He is the lamb. He became the lamb for our sake. All we need do now is just to accept that you are a sinner and believe that He died for our sake and that ends the story. God is worthy, who are we that He is mindful of us. Romans 10:9-10.

Yes! I owed a dept but couldn't pay. Jesus Christ paid the dept he did not owe all for me. Acknowledged! All praises to him.

Great post.

Jesus Christ came to help us overcome sin, adversity, and death. The Atonement is the most important event in the history of mankind.

Thanks for sharing...

It is a great teaching brother, especially for the meaning and importance that our Lord Jesus Christ gave us human beings.
