What is being blessed?

There are two Greek terms that are translated as "blessed" in the Bible:

a) "euloguémenos" denotes the happiness that comes from outside.

b) "makarios", which refers to an internal condition, and is the one that Jesus uses here. Its meaning is "happy, blessed, happy, worthy to be congratulated"

"When he saw the multitudes, he went up on the side of a mountain and sat down." His disciples approached him and, taking his word, he began to teach them, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”... "Matthew 5: 1-3

Why is he happy, blessed, happy, worthy of being congratulated, the poor in spirit?

The text is clear: "... because of them is the kingdom of heaven." And if Jesus said that theirs is the kingdom of heaven, then it must be a very important quality.

By saying "poor in spirit," he is referring to that person who recognizes his "spiritual weakness." Therefore, he goes and depends totally on God and his mercy.

For thus said the High and Sublime, the one who inhabits eternity, and whose name is the Holy One: I dwell in height and sanctity, and with the broken and humble of spirit, to live the spirit of the humble, and to to quicken the hearts of the broken ones. "Isaiah 57:15

It means that the disciple of Christ will not depend on the position he has reached, nor will he rely on his own natural talents and abilities. But it will depend totally on the grace of God and will submit to Him absolutely. He looks at himself and recognizes his absolute need for the highest.

Prostrate before the greatness of God, he discovers his smallness, temporality, limitations and sinfulness.

Everything we do is in search of happiness. The human being longs to be happy. Some think that if they had this or that thing they would experience greater happiness. Whether it's money, a new car, a better job, etc. Similar was what happened in the time of Jesus.

The Jews expected a golden age, a material kingdom characterized by victory over their enemies where they would be exalted and enjoy prosperity and great glory.

In view of this, Jesus Christ pronounces the first Beatitude with the purpose of correcting the illusions of his followers regarding the nature of the kingdom and explaining how it should be character of his followers, in contrast, Christ teaches that the happy in the kingdom will not be the powerful but the humble. Those who are able to recognize their limitations, their vulnerability, those who bend their necks, in the presence of God the Father.

To be poor in spirit is to have the ability to recognize my humanity before God, to arrive before Him knowing that I have absolutely nothing that can impress him, it is to admit my weakness, my vulnerability and fragility; it is to arrive before Him without titles, without knowledge, without epaulettes; is to understand that nothing I do is really important, because it is not about me, it is about Him.

"You say: I am rich, I have become rich and I have no need. But you do not know that you are hapless, miserable, poor, blind and you are naked. “(Rev 3:17)

Without God even when we have material things, we are hapless. We must humble ourselves and recognize our dependence on our Heavenly Father.
