I started this topic The Shepherd who leads and guides yesterday. In my post yesterday, I discussed the characteristics of God's Guidance and Leadership.

In the post I also outlined some of the ways God led and guided his people in the Bible which are

• Through angels
• Through visions
• Through dreams
• Through burning bush
• Through miraculous signs
• Through the use of Urim and Thummim
• Through symbolic actions
• Through a gentle whisper
• Through fleece Judges
• Through casting of lots
  And so on

As I promised yesterday, I will be talking on the way God leads and guides today.

Way God leads and guides today

The question many will want to ask is that, which of the above listed ways is the best for us today?

In as much as we cannot push aside the above ways God led his people in the past, it should be clear to us that God in this last days speaks to us through His son Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:1-3 (NIV)
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.
3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Jesus is the sufficient and the final revelation of God to us. When Jesus was preparing to leave the world, he promised to send the Holy Spirit to us. The Holy Spirit now represents Jesus.

John 14:25-26 (NIV)
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you.
26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:12-15 (NKJV)
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Today, God speaks to us maily by the Holy Spirit through His word and prayer.

• For any believer to be led by God, a personal relationship with Jesus as the good shepherd is more important than any method or formula to receiving direction from God.
• Circumstances and other believers can help confirm what God has told you
• What you sense God is leading you to do must be in agreement with the written word. Be careful not to look for scripture to support your self-interests
• God may still lead or guide us using some of the methods listed above, but we have to be very careful because these are secondary means of seeking direction.

Attitudes/requirements for receiving guidance from God.

John 8:47 (NIV)
Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

1. Get rid of self interest before seeking direction from God
2. Prepare your mind in advance to do whatever the Lord leads you to do
3. Complete obedience opens you to receiving direction from God while partial obedience denies you of such guidance
4. Learn to pray and wait on God patience. It is very important
5. Be sensitive to the Spirit and cultivate listening heart/eyes
6. Connect what happens after you have prayed with your prayer.
