Luke 5 1-11: Row offshore and throw nets!

Luke 5 1-11

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Dear friends

The evangelist Luke places us on the shores of Lake Genesaret. The stage is built there with the presence of a large group of Jesus listeners, among them, Simon and other fishermen. Here we direct our attention to what is to come: not only must we be "listeners of the Word" but also "know how to respond".

From the first moment Jesus is at the center of attention. Its main activity is the teaching of "the Word of God". Jesus carries out his activity with some difficulty because of the large number of people, so he asks for a first collaboration: the use of Pedro's boat. This boat becomes the pulpit of the Master.

Then Jesus appoints his collaborators in the mission and does so in the midst of the miracle of abundant fishing after an unsuccessful night.

The disciple is a person who knows how to trust and support his life in the Word of Jesus. This is demonstrated by abundant fishing.

Faced with this event, Simon and his companions do not remain insensitive, they are tremendously amazed. Given the greatness of the fact, Simon realizes who Jesus is and realizes that he is only a poor sinner.

Simon's negative reaction is greeted with a positive gesture from Jesus: "Do not be afraid, from now on you will be a fisherman of men".

Like the disciples of the Lord in the lake of Gennesaret, let us ask that the saving work of his mercy be fully fruitful in us, and that with the help of his grace we tend to perfection and be grateful in everything. Extending the message of salvation with our networks. For Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
