You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be salted again? It's then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men (Matthew 5: 13)

Jesus of Nazareth was not just amazing Rabbi, but also powerful, intelligent and great Teacher. His lessons and teachings are very practical, significant and useful to spiritual and physical life of mankind.
In our today's devotion, the Lord unveils to us amazing truths for life for both Jews and Christians.
Jews as well as Christians are salt of the earth. What does that mean and implies?
In Jesus days, the Jews used salt in five significant ways.
First, as Covenant Symbol. (Lev 2: 13, Numb 18: 19, 2 Chron 13: 5). So as the salt of the earth, not a salt from the earth, they were the covenant people of God, who were to represent God to the world around them through their godly, holy influence. And Jesus says, you and I are too.
Second, for Flavour (Job 6: 6). Salt was used to give taste and flavour to food. And as God's covenant people, we are to impart taste and flavour of God's grace and truth to people's lives and to the society.
Third, as Seasoning. In Jesus days, there were no refrigerators. So the people used salt to season meat and fish products from going bad. And this is a powerful calling of you and I to keep godly values, ethics and standards from being corrupted.
Fourth, as Disinfectant. We thank God for modern life. For example, we have WC in our houses where we go there, do our thing and flush it out. In Jesus days, it was not so. They had what is called Dunghill, a piece of plot behind most houses with a pot of sand and salt. So when they go there to do their thing, they use the sand and salt mixed together to cover them. This prevents spreading of diseases and scent in the community (Luke 14: 34 -35). The role of God's covenant people are to be spiritual disinfectants in the society, arresting and purging corruption, sin, perversion and evil in people's lives, homes and society through the power and the truth of God.
Fifth, as Fertilizer. Salt from the Dead See was use in the field to grow crops and promote good harvest. Because salt is rich in potassium. Jesus said, that is the Calling of God's covenant people, to make things fruitful, people to have productive lives and society flourishing and abound in good things.

Dear friends, we have a problem here. We are failing in our calling as the salt of the earth. The Jews failed in that respect, and Christians and the Churches are following suit!
But I don't like what Jesus pronounced as Judgment for that.
He said, God would call us good for nothing, implying no use for His kingdom and His righteous purposes. And there is only one result for this: To be thrown down and to be trampled underfoot, first by ungodly, non church people and second by demon and devilish spirits. If you think Jesus didn't mean what He said, just check what has happened to Jews in their history and check what is happening to Christians and the Churches all over the world. It is so sad to hear Pope Francis calling the Catholic priests "Tools of Satan", just a few days ago! Humbling! Isn't it?
But you and I have the opportunity now to repent and ask the Lord to resalt us to regain our saltiness as God's covenant people, to begin to affect, infect and impart godly, holy influences in our own lives, homes, workplace, churches and society as a whole.
So as you go through the year and live life, know who you are and let your influence be positive, godly, holy and truthful to the glory of God and for the benefit of society.
May our influence from today be as we have been called to be and to do. And may the Lord help all of us and salt us again to become the true salt of the earth in Jesus name. Amen
