1 Samuel 3:9
"Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down. It shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place."

Samuel was 12 years old and "ministered“at the temple. He directed not preach nor teach, but served by putting oil in the lamps, opening the gates each morning, and helping Eli, the high priest, who was oleander going blind To minister is to be a servant.
" The word of God was precious in those days". This means it was rare. In other words, God did not speak to the people very often. He did not reveal Himself to the nation through prophets or vision. The reason was that the leaders did not pray. They were not listening to the voice of the Lord. It is too bad that God could not speak to Eli directly.He spoke to him through the boy by Samuel.During the night, Samuel was awakened by a voice and he thought it was Eli calling him for help.He ran to Eli, but he had not called him. The voice came second and a third time, "Samuel" but both times he found Eli did not called.
The Bible says Samuel did not yet know the Lord. He had never heard God's voice before. Even though he knew a lot about the temple worship, he had no personal relationship with God. There is a danger for our children today who are brought up in church. They learn Lord but sometimes never experience His saving power in their lives Even if we have been born into a Christian family and have gone to church all our lives, we still need to have our own personal experience with God.

When the voice came fourth time, Samuel said "Here I am". And God revealed Himself in a vision. Samuel saw Him standing by His bed, and heard Him say what was going to happen to Eli and his family. Samuel did not want to tell Eli about His vision, for he knew it will hurt him. Sadly Samuel told him God was going to condemn him This was a turning point in the boy's life. He would never be the same again after having this revelation of God. He grew to be great spiritual leader who was respected by all Israel.

God has many ways of speaking to people. He may speak out loud as He did to Samuel, but more often He speaks through the Bible. The Holy spirit applies the word to our hearts in such a way that, we know it meant for us. Sometimes He speaks by circumstances. He allows things to happen to show us His will. He may speak through the advice of godly friend, or through the gifts of the spirit. But in each case the Lord wants to deal with us personally so that we know in our own hearts what His will for us is.
