The Consequences of Drifting --- Devotional

Spiritual drifting­—the gradual separation of a Christian from God and His will— happens when a believer stops to move towards the Lord. Just as a boat without oars sets loose on the water body, a believer makes slow glides away from good attitude and practices like regular Bible study, regular prayer, obedience, and fellowship with other believers. However, there are repercussions for slipping into uncharted and perilous waters.

The Holy Spirit pricks the conscience of christians to convey a message when the believer goes off course, but a drifter becomes prone to ignore such cautions. Should a believer continue with his or her wandering ways, his or her conscience gradually becomes numb. A Christian who becomes desensitized to sin paves way for more sinful behavior with less guilt. The drifted believer also invites wrong attitudes and philosophies into his thinking. What is more, his or her heart hardens to things of God. Drifted believers shrink away from testimonies about the divine power of God, His grace and mercy. Furthermore, he or she avoids situations or circumstances that might reawaken his or her conscience and stir his or her spirit to repentance.

People usually drift away from God in search of more pleasures, freedom, and choices. However, the consequences are very grave, and such people end up with less. Only Christ can guarantee freedom and permanent satisfaction.
