Prayer allows us to cast our burdens on the Lord (Ps 55.22) and receive guidance and help from Him. However, all too often we do not appreciate this privilege in all that it is worth and instead of recourse to the Father in prayer, we try to solve our problems on their own.

You and I can experience the power of God in our daily lives if we are willing to bow down to Him and sincerely seek Him, recognizing that on our knees we are workshop and stronger. But do we have to kneel every time we pray? Do not

Physically there are many who can not do so, so the attitude of our heart should be one of reverent fear and submission to the omnipotent God. If our concept of prayer is correct, we can trust Him to answer our requests.

Nehemiah knew how to be tall and strong on his knees. In his role as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes, Nehemiah had a very influential position and probably lived in luxury, but since he was one of the captive Jews, he was not at liberty to go wherever he wanted.

When he learned that the walls of Jerusalem were in ruins and, therefore, vulnerable to attack, he sought God in prayer and mourned for a few days (Neh 1.4).

The Lord gave him grace with the king, who gave him permission to absent himself for a time and at the same time supplied the exiled building materials and gave them military protection (Neh 2.5-9). He also gave letters to the governors of the provinces that they would spend on their way to Jerusalem to be allowed to move on.

On several occasions, Nehemiah sought the Lord by encountering problems or threats, asking for strength to continue despite criticism and discouragement (Neh 4.1-5). God granted him wisdom to face his opponents (Neh 6.1-3) and to defend the cities (Neh 4.18).

To the surprise of their enemies, the Jews rebuilt the wall in 52 days and, most importantly, they had a spiritual revival as a result of Nehemiah's faithfulness.

How should we pray?

Recognizing that God is the sovereign of the universe. Nehemiah addressed his prayers to God "strong, great and fearful" (Neh. 1.5); He knew that He controls absolutely everything (Ps 103.19). As far as we are concerned, even though we are in the most difficult circumstances, our heavenly Father never ceases to be the one who dominates and controls the universe.

Honoring the holiness of God. When Isaiah saw the Lord in his glory, he felt unclean, even though his life was right (Is 6.1-6). As humans, we are all very far from achieving the absolute sanctity of God.

Although He is our Father and is interested in every detail of our lives, He is still sovereign, which implies that we must approach Him with fear and reverence. Those attitudes prompted Nehemiah to fast and pray for 4 months. He turned to God, not to himself, for the solution of the problems of Jerusalem.

Repenting of our sins. The Bible teaches us that God will not listen to our prayers if we consent to sin in our hearts (Ps 66.18). He can be good to us and his kindness leads us to repentance (Ro 2: 4), but we must confess our sins. The purity of heart and the power of God always go together.

Recognizing our insufficiency. Nehemiah was not prepared to repair walls nor had he led an army; As an exile, he was not known to the Jews of Jerusalem and they did not have to obey him. Even so, he trusted God and obeyed. If God commands us to do something, He will not tell us to do what we can without His strength and power. He will teach us to depend completely on Him and will equip us with all the necessary resources.

Being available for God to use us. Nehemiah was willing to obey what God ordered him to do because he trusted that He would solve the difficulties that might arise.

We also have access to the divine Counselor. He knows every detail of our afflictions. Are we willing to obey what He commands us? God will cover our mistakes and lift us up when we fall. We have to obey.

Experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit that empowers us to carry out what God entrusts to us. The success of Nehemiah was not due to his education, his personality or his political relations, because he had maintained a close relationship with the heavenly Father and always resorted to him (Neh 2.4).

If we believe we are unworthy or insignificant, let us remember that God has us in another concept and that he sees us as individuals with great potential. With the power of the Spirit we will be able to do what He tells us and will also supply the strength and capacity we need.

Obtaining the vision and direction of God. Nehemiah was devastated when he learned of the condition of Jerusalem, but when he sought God in prayer, he assigned him the role he should play.

If you knew what you should do for the rest of your life, what would it be? Seek the Lord with that desire and allow Him to perfect it; ask him to enable him to fulfill his will for his life; give your dreams to the heavenly Father; and observe what He will do in and through you.

As a child of God, you have the enormous privilege of bending your knees and speaking personally with the supreme authority of the universe. Do not despise that precious gift.

With all humility approach the throne of grace with your needs, confess your sin and admit that the challenges presented by life are too difficult for you and that you need their help. The heavenly Father will reveal his plans and will enable you by granting him everything you need to be successful.
