Peter did not understand what was about to happen, although he must have had the discernment necessary to know it. Neither Jacob, nor John, nor any of the other disciples had it. Although they had been with Jesus for three years, they still did not have a clear idea of God's eternal plan, and this failure would become their shame.

Among the disciples, a dispute arose over who would be the greatest among them. Jesus intervened, saying: "The greatest among you [be] like the youngest, and the leader, as the one who serves" (Lk 22.26). Later, he revealed to them an amazing truth: they would all leave him that night. But Peter categorically denied that possibility, saying: "Though all be scandalized by you, I will never be shocked" (Mt 26.33). Nobody seemed aware of the rapid development of what was taking place. As the afternoon progressed, the disciples listened to the Lord as he told them he would be betrayed, but his message did not reach their hearts. They could not conceive that such a thing happened, not to a man who had changed the lives of so many, and who had literally worked miracles before his eyes. With death and pain approaching quickly, the disciples fell asleep, without having learned the most important lesson to win any battle. What lesson? That we have to watch and pray.

ARE WE NEGLIGENT AS REGARDS OUR FAITH?

Most of us have met, sometime, in situations where we knew something was about to change. We could feel it. We may have been warned in advance; It is even possible that someone told us in advance what was going to happen, but we were not willing to accept any other possibility.

We refuse to listen, because we were immersed in our needs, and in our desires, dreams and passions. Instead of heeding the warning and preparing for what was to come, we decided to ignore the message. We were negligent. Then, only after we were hit by adversity, we realized that we had lost an opportunity to trust in God.

After the arrest and crucifixion of the Savior, the disciples probably did what most of us would have done: they thought about the details that led to that night, and about the fact that they changed their lives forever. Was it that they did not see something, a sign of why things had turned out so different from what they expected? Could they have done something to prevent the arrest of Jesus? Had they not been loyal to Him? Did they expect the same fate?

Certainly, the Christian's main victory was won on the cross. It was there that God sacrificed his Son for the sins of humanity. Jesus had to die, so that we could have eternal life. There has been no greater victory than this; but in the previous hours that led to this moment a very important victory was achieved.

It took place that same night in the Garden of Gethsemane. It was here that Jesus surrendered completely to the will of his Father. If He had not done this, the cross could never have been lifted. You and I would have been lost forever.

There is also another very revealing truth about what happened in the garden hours before the arrest of Jesus. The disciples had the great opportunity to demonstrate their fidelity, however, they did not pass the test, not once but three times. Can we learn something from his failure? So that's it.

At the end of the paschal meal, Jesus took his disciples from the upper room to a place of isolation and prayer. He asked them to stay alert and vigilant, but they did neither one thing nor the other. Jesus chose three men - Peter, James and John - with whom he had a particularly close relationship, so that they could go to a place of intimate prayer, which was even closer to the heart of God. He was literally a few steps away from where He had made his personal surrender prayer.

JESUS WAS NOT ONLY GOD; IT WAS ALSO HUMAN. <blockquotes><div class="text-justify"> In Gethsemane, his human condition became more evident. He was distressed, suffering and feeling very lonely, even though his friends were with Him. Jesus had to surrender to God's plan, or not do the will of the Father. There was no way to avoid the importance of that moment.

He said to his disciples: "My soul is very sad, until death, stay here, and watch with me." Going forward a little, he fell on his face, praying and saying: "My father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. but it is not as I want, but as you are. "Then he came to his disciples, and found them sleeping, and said to Peter," So you could not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again he went and prayed a second time, saying: My Father, if this cup can not pass from me without me drinking it, your will be done. He came again and found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy with sleep "(Mt 26.38-43).

What happened next is more than we would like to imagine. Jesus came back a third time, only to find them asleep again. Matthew wrote: "And leaving them, he departed again, and prayed for the third time, saying the same words." Then he came to his disciples and said to them, "Sleep now, and rest.

ALLOW PRAYER TO BE YOUR FIRST RESPONSE

There will come a time when God will call us to pray, and then we will have to act according to what we have learned from Him. But if we have not spent time with the Lord, we will not know how to remain firm in our faith.

We will also lack the discernment and the key wisdom to make good decisions. When we come to the place of prayer, the place where Jesus took those men that night, we must be completely focused on his holiness, so much so that being in his infinite presence makes us kneel. Jesus humbled himself before the Father, and those men had the opportunity to be witnesses of how he prayed, although they did not.

When we face challenges that are too great for us, our first response should be to go to God in prayer. Victory in all battles is obtained only in one place: in the place of prayer.

Instead of sitting down, make the effort to prostrate yourself before the Lord; Extend on the floor and remain calm in his presence. Some people may not be able to do this physically, but they can prostrate themselves before Him in their heart.

Think of the inner strength that Peter would have achieved that night, of having done what Jesus asked him to do: watch and pray. Or consider the discernment and power you would have had to follow the example of Christ. John and James would undoubtedly have joined Peter, and the others would have done the same. They would have achieved the courage they so badly needed. But, when the enemy attacked, they ran out of fear of losing their lives.

In prayer there is unlimited power. This is one of the reasons why Jesus asked his followers to pray with Him that night. People, many times, want to know God's will for their lives. They spend money buying books and trying different methods to learn something new that gives meaning to their lives. But the truth is that, what you are looking for, is right in front of your eyes. Everything important is achieved through prayer.

Think of the inner strength that Peter would have achieved that night, of having done what Jesus asked him to do: watch and pray, because Peter never imagined denying Jesus. God bless you
