From its birth, Christianity is the proclamation of joy. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord," said the angel to the shepherds, announcing the birth of Christ (Luke 2:10-11).
Throughout the gospels, joy is also mentioned: Zacchaeus "went down quickly, and received him joyfully" (Luke 19:6). It is the joy of having met the Lord, of feeling the love of God, that love that transforms life and brings salvation.
On the morning of the resurrection, several women went to the tomb where the body of the Lord Jesus had been laid. There an angel made them the surprising announcement of the Lord's resurrection, and they, "with fear and great joy", ran to tell the disciples the happy news (Matthew 28:8).
Before His ascension, Jesus promised His disciples His spiritual presence with them: "I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). Henceforth, by faith they would keep the precious memory of the person of the risen Christ, after the terrible sufferings of the crucifixion. What a joy! Joy for deliverance, joy for the love that overcame evil, sin, and death.
Luke's gospel ends by mentioning this joy after the ascension of the risen Christ: the disciples "returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were always in the temple praising and blessing God" (Luke 24:52-53).
@mosdad, joy is an expression of the soul, I firmly believe that it is in the heart of those who have Jesus. It is not temporary, but eternal.
