How Do We Honor Our Elders In Our Societies?

Beloved in Christ, what God had Stipulated in the Bible should not be taken for granted. One of these is how to honor our elders in the societies in which we live. In the old Testament God said this that we should try as much as possible to obey our elders in all manners of life so that we may live for long in the land God has given to us!

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you."(Exodus 20:12NIV)

This means that failure to honor this law will lead to reduction of our lifespan on the the land God will give us. This law was again confirmed in the new Testament, which means that God is keen about us taking good care of our elders.

“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise.(Ephesians 6:2NIV)

In our nations how do we treat our elders? Most people do not have respect for the aged, especially when the life of the person seems to be whimsical, they tend to reject him in the society. But the leaders in the nation have the responsibilities to take good care of their elders, making sure that they enjoy better living. It is sometimes very sad to see our pensioniers, especially in most of African countries suffering to even make ends meet. This is because their salaries are divided into 1/3 and given one every month. This leads to hardship conditions for them. Since they are unable to survive with that meagre salary. So, can't we adjust their salary for them to enjoy better lives till they die? I think this something we should re-consider to help our elders who have gone on pension.

The Churches have the same responsibilities to honor our elders. We have many people who have attained more than sixty years living with us in Churches and suffering. These elders have their freedoms which we can also help them to enjoy better. One of these is looking after them financially. Continuous visitations to see how they are kicking. In most cases what we see is neglecting them and just paying lip services that we should treat them well, but the actual work on the ground is never seen. Beloved in Christ, God will ask us why we did not honor our elders. Let us be conscious this and act accordingly. Thank you all for your time!
