Where Are They Now?: The Demons That Roamed the Earth

구약성경에는 귀신에 대한 언급이 거의 없습니다.
There aren't much mention about demons in the Old Testaments.

사울이 악신이 들렸을 때 다윗이 수금을 타서 쫓아내주었다는 내용이나, 욥기에서 하나님의 어전회의 때 사탄이 등장하는 것이 고작일 뿐이죠.
Story about David playing lyre to drive the devil that haunted King Saul and Satan talking to God in the book of Job are pretty much it.

그러나 예수님이 사역의 전면에 등장하자 곳곳에서 귀신들이 나타나기 시작합니다.
But when Jesus appeared and started his ministry, demons started to appear.

그래서 예수님과 사도들은 수많은 귀신들린 사람들에게서 귀신을 쫓아내고 귀신들이 일으켰던 각종 정신질환과 고질병을 치유하며 복음을 전파하고 영혼을 구원하는 사역을 하고 계십니다.
Jesus and his disciples drove out countless demons out of people and healed many maladies caused by them; they also spread gospel and carry out God's work.

그렇다면 구약시대에 보이지 않던 귀신들이, 어떻게 예수님 시대가 되자 갑자기 나타났으며, 또다시 이 시대에는 귀신이야기를 좀처럼 들을 수가 없습니다.
The demons that weren't really seen in the Old Testament period started appearing when Jesus came down to Earth all of sudden; but they are again under the radar and are not really seen or heard.

그렇다면 그 당시에는 우글우글하던 귀신들이 지금의 시대에는 흔적도 없이 사라졌다는 말이라도 될까요?
Then where did they go? Did they just appear and then disappear again?

귀신들은 하나님과 천사와 마찬가지로 영혼불멸 하는 영적 존재입니다.
Demons are immortal spiritual beings, just like angels and God himself.

그러므로 그들이 없어졌다가 나타나고, 존재가 드러났다가 다시 사라지는 일은 없죠.
So there is no way for them to disappear and them appear again, or vice versa.

그렇다면 왜 구약시대에 보이지 않던 귀신들이 예수님이 등장하자 대거 나타나기 시작을까요?
Then why did all those demons started crawling out when Jesus appeared?

영혼불멸의 귀신들은 하나님께서 아담을 짓기 이전부터 지구상에 내려와 있었습니다.
These immortal spirits were already on Earth, way before God created Adam.

그래서 아담과 하와에게 선악과를 먹으라는 죄의 유혹을 하지 않았습니까?
Didn't Satan tempt Adam and Eve to eat the fruit of knowledge?

그들은 아담이 생겨나기 이전부터 지구에 내려와 있던 존재들이었기 때문입니다.
It is because they were already there, long before Adam and Eve did.

그러나 그들의 전략은 철저하게 자신의 정체를 속이는 것이죠.
But their strategy is to deceive their true identity.

그래서 예수님이 등장하기 전까지는 감쪽같이 사람들을 속여서 자신들의 목적을 달성하고 있었던 것입니다.
That is why they weren't seen; they deceived people in order to achieve their goals.

죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하나니 마귀는 처음부터 범죄함이라 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 것은 마귀의 일을 멸하려 하심이라(요일3:8)
The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. (1 John 3: 8)

하나님이 나사렛 예수에게 성령과 능력을 기름 붓듯 하셨으매 그가 두루 다니시며 선한 일을 행하시고 마귀에게 눌린 모든 사람을 고치셨으니 이는 하나님이 함께 하셨음이라(행10:38)
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. (Acts 10: 38)

그렇다면 예수님이 나타나시자 귀신들이 등장한 이유는 무엇일까요?
Then what is the reason for demons appearing during Jesus' time?

그 이유는 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 목적이 귀신의 일을 멸하러 오셨기 때문입니다.
It is because the sole purpose of Jesus' coming to this world was to destroy the devil's work.

그래서 예수님의 사역의 중심은 귀신들에게 눌려서 정신질환과 고질병을 앓고 있으며, 귀신들의 공격으로 인한 각종 삶의 문제로 시름시름 앓던 사람들에게서 귀신을 쫓아내시고 영혼과 삶을 회복시켜주셨죠.

말하자면 예수님만이 사탄의 역사를 분별하고 귀신을 쫓아낼 수 있었던 겁니다.
Jesus was the only one who were able to tell apart demons' presence; and that was why he was able to drive them out.

그러나 예수님이 승천하시고 나서 사도들과 제자들에게도 성령이 임하시고 예수님과 같이 성령의 능력을 기름 붓듯 하시자, 이들도 예수님처럼 귀신의 정체를 드러내어 귀신을 쫓아내고 고질병을 치유하면서 영혼구원사역을 진행해 나갔던 것이지요.
But after Jesus ascended to Heaven, the Holy Spirit filled the spot and came down to apostles and other disciples, flooding them with spiritual gifts; these people started to drive demons out, heal sick people, and rescued people's souls, just like Jesus did.

그렇다면 이 시대에는 귀신들이 죄다 사라져버린 것일까요? 아니죠.
Does that mean all the demons disappear in this day and age? Probably not.

구약시대처럼 귀신의 정체를 알아채고 쫓아내는 성령의 사람이 없기 때문에, 귀신들이 활개치고 다니면서 사람들에게 들어가서 죄를 짓게 하여 불행에 빠뜨려서 고통을 주고 생명과 영혼을 사냥하고 있어도, 아무도 이를 눈치 채지 못하거나 쫓아내며 이들이 일으킨 정신질환과 고질병을 치유하지 못하는 겁니다.
And that's why no one is really able to heal anyone; no one realizes the illnesses are caused by demons, and no one has the ability to fight against them because not that many people have the ability given by the Holy Spirit. This era is just like the days of the Old Testament; they roam around freely, deceiving everyone they come by, make them sin, and put them into misery.

그러나 우리네 교회는 자신들의 무능과 무기력을 인정하지 않고, 귀신들이 교회와 교인들에게 범접할 수 없다는 기이한 말로 얼버무리고 있습니다.
But churches today do not accept or admit their inability to fight against them; they just assure people that demons cannot harm anyone that comes to church.

그렇다면 사탄이 예수님을 찾아와서 유혹을 하고 베드로와 가룟유다에게 들어가서 시험에 걸려들게 한 이유가, 예수님과 제자들이 우리네 교회보다 영적 능력이 허접해서일까요?
Does that mean Jesus and his disciples had weaker power than Christians today. since demons were more prominent back in his time?

기가 막히고 어처구니가 없는 일이죠.
That's just ridiculous to even think about, isn't it?

그렇다면 예수님시대처럼 이 시대에도 귀신들이 우글우글할 것입니다.
That means that we are living in a world, full of demons, just like when Jesus was here.

그렇다면 귀신의 존재를 어떻게 알아챌 수 있을까요?
Then how do we know they are there?

귀신들은 영이기 때문에 육안의 눈으로 이들의 정체를 알아챌 수 없습니다.
Demons are spirits; they can't be seen with our physical eyes.

이들의 정체를 아는 길은 영적 분별력을 가져야 합니다.
You must have spiritual discernment to tell them apart.

그러나 성경을 통해서도 이들의 정체를 얼마든지 알아챌 수가 있어요.
You can also distinguish them through the Bible.

귀신들의 목적은 사람들에게 죄를 짓게 하여 불행에 빠뜨려 고통을 주고 영혼과 생명을 사냥하는 겁니다.
Demons' goal is to make people sin, put them into misery and pain, preying on the lives and souls.

그러므로 하나님을 모르는 세상 사람들은 말할 것도 없고, 죄를 밥 먹듯이 짓고 있으면서도 회개할 생각을 하지 않고 종교의식에만 몰두하고 있는 교인들이 바로 귀신에게 눌려 있는 사람들입니다.
Christians who sin constantly but don't even think of repenting, but still focusing on the religious act in itself, would be serving demons and are controlled by them; there is no point of mentioning secular people at this point.

죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하나니 마귀는 처음부터 범죄함이라(요일3:8)
The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. (1 John 3: 8)

너희 자신을 종으로 드려 누구에게 순종하든지 그 순종함을 받는 자의 종이 되는 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐 혹은 죄의 종으로 사망에 이르고 혹은 순종의 종으로 의에 이르느니라(롬6:16)
Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6: 16)

육신을 좇는 자는 육신의 일을, 영을 좇는 자는 영의 일을 생각하나니 육신의 생각은 사망이요 영의 생각은 생명과 평안이니라 육신의 생각은 하나님과 원수가 되나니 이는 하나님의 법에 굴복치 아니할뿐 아니라 할 수도 없음이라 육신에 있는 자들은 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없느니라 만일 너희 속에 하나님의 영이 거하시면 너희가 육신에 있지 아니하고 영에 있나니 누구든지 그리스도의 영이 없으면 그리스도의 사람이 아니라(롬8:5~9)
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. (Romans 8: 5-9)

당신이 육체의 욕심을 쫓아 죄의 법을 따라가고 있다면 죄의 종이고 죄를 짓게 하는 귀신의 종입니다.
If you are pursuing worldly things, following the way of sins, you are servant of sins and servant of demons.

그러나 형식적인 영접기도로 성령이 계신 것을 철썩 같이 믿고 죄를 밥 먹듯이 짓고 있으면서 회개할 생각도 하지 않으니, 어떻게 그리스도의 사람이 되었다고 말하겠습니까?
But how can you be confident of being a servant of Jesus, when you sin nonchalantly but do not even think about repenting, believing that the Holy Spirit is with you because you have recited acceptance prayer.

거의 대부분의 크리스천들이 교회마당을 밟으면서 예배의식에 참석하고 희생적인 신앙생활을 하고 있지만, 그들의 마음은 여전히 육체의 욕심을 따라 살아가고 있습니다.
Majority of Christians participate in church services and activities devotedly, but their hearts still follow their physical wants.

그래서 교회에 나온 목적과 기도하는 내용 그리고 희생적인 신앙행위의 목적도 죄다 자기의 의를 자랑하고 세속적인 욕망을 이루고 싶어 하는 것이죠.
The only reason they participate in church activities in devoted manner is to boast and brag about how religious they are, while they obtain all the worldly things.

그리고는 자신들 안에 성령이 계시다는 것을 기정사실화 하고 있습니다.
They believe the Holy Spirit resides within them without a doubt.

그러나 그들의 영혼과 삶의 상태를 보십시오.
Take a look at their souls and their lives.

건조하고 냉랭한 영혼과 무능하고 무기력한 믿음으로 고단하고 팍팍한 삶을 살고 있지 않습니까?
Aren't they living in misery, with their firm belief of their salvation?

그래서 아무리 기도해도 지난한 삶의 문제가 해결되지 않고, 정신질환자들과 고질병에 걸린 교인들은 세상적인 방법을 찾고 병원을 찾아 헤매다가 시간과 재산을 낭비하고 있죠.
That is why they spend money and time trying to resolve their issues, looking for doctors and counselors; nothing came out from praying.

그런데 어떻게 그들이 전지전능한 그리스도의 영이 계신 하나님의 자녀이겠습니까?
How can they call themselves children of God?

귀신에게 속아서 눌려있으면서 이를 알아채지 못하고, 평생 돈의 노예가 되어 자신을 우상으로 섬기며 육신의 욕망을 쫒다가 죄다 지옥의 불길에 던져지게 될 것입니다.
They will be all thrown out to Hell's fire if they don't realize they are being deceived by demons; they will spend their lives becoming slaves of money and wealth, serving themselves, following worldly pleasures.
