The Apostles of Christ

The Twelve Foundations of the new Jerusalem

Source

The apostles of Christ are the cornerstones of his church. Revelation 21:14 says that the twelve foundations of the wall of the New Jerusalem will have inscribed on them the names of the twelve disciples, with this it is clear to us, that our Lord attributes great importance to these men.

Revelation 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Hearing the teachings of Jesus and seeing his miracles, many people followed him and each with a different reason. Some expected to see a miracle, others were interested to hear his parables, some believed that he was the Messiah and wanted Jesus to touch their lives in one way or another.

Among so many people Jesus chose 12 men to work closely with him. Under his leadership, these men preached and helped manage the crowds that gathered to listen to Jesus. Hence the twelve apostles of our Lord Jesus.

Apostle means sent and is the most appropriate title when referring to them, because they were chosen by Christ with the purpose of being sent to preach the gospel, being sent on several occasions in pairs to preach in different towns. They were responsible for traveling and establishing what we know today as the Christian church. Paul was also an apostle, because in a vision Jesus appeared to him and sent him to preach. This group was special and Jesus chose him after praying to God for them.

Matthew 10: 1-4
Then calling his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over the unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every sickness and every disease.
The names of the twelve apostles are these: first Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother; Jacob the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Felipe, Bartolomé, Tomás, Mateo the publican, Jacobo son of Alfeo, Lebeo, surnamed Tadeo, Simón the cananista, and Judas Iscariote, the one that also delivered to him.

1 Simon: Jesus called him Peter, which means stone, perhaps because of his strong character and temperament. He always acted with great passion. He was a fisherman by profession and denied Jesus three times when he was arrested. Even so, after receiving forgiveness, it was used by God to give the first evangelistic discourse after the resurrection.

2 Andrew: Like his brother Pedro, he was a fisherman. Tradition says that he was condemned to crucifixion. Not feeling worthy to die like Jesus, they crucified him with their heads down.

3 Jacob son of Zebedee: Big brother of Juan and cousin of Jesus. His ministry was to preach in Jerusalem and in Judea, until Herod ordered him to kill in the 44th of our Lord.

4 John: The youngest of all and the author of the fourth gospel, 1,2 and 3 of John and Revelation. He was the only one who did not abandon Jesus during his trial. Jesus called him "the beloved disciple".

5 Felipe: Perhaps a fisherman, a common profession in Bethsaida from where he was. He preached the gospel in Phrygia and Hierapolis.

6 Bartholomew: His first name was Nataniel, and when Jesus called him he said that he was "a true Israelite."

7 Matthew: Also called Levi, he is the author of the first gospel. He was a tax collector and that's why he had a bad reputation for being a thief and a traitor. His life changed when Jesus called him.

8 Thomas: When he heard about the resurrection he said he had to see it to believe it. By witnessing the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, he made Thomas travel to India preaching. There he died.

99 Jacobo son of Alfeo: He was from Galilee and some believe he was Tadeo's brother. He took the gospel to Palestine and Egypt, where he died.

10 Tadeo: They also knew him as Judas and Lebeo. He took the gospel to Edessa near the Euphrates River.

11 Simon the cananist: A fanatical nationalist Jew who hated Rome. Jesus changed his heart and Simon dedicated his life to the gospel.

12 Judas Iscariot: Possibly it was from Judah. He betrayed Jesus and was an accomplice in his arrest. Realizing the seriousness of his actions, Judas hanged himself.

12 Matías: It was not one of the originals, but it was chosen by the other 11 to take the place that Judas left empty.

In all the old testamente we see how their faith matures and with the power that God used them, they could preach and take the gospel in different parts of the world, and almost all died martyrs of the gospel, they were responsible for traveling and establishing what that we know today as the Christian church. Today there are many churches founded and established throughout the world, all with a single purpose to make known the love of Jesus for humanity, his sacrifice on the cross of Calvary and that is the true path that leads to the father .
