The Leaven of the Pharisees

What is this "yeast of the Pharisees?

The leaven of the Pharisees "is a curious phrase. Why did Christ feel the need to warn his disciples to avoid it? Would you recognize that "yeast" if I saw it?

In this, the multitude gathered by thousands, so much so that they crushed each other, began to say to his disciples, first: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Luke 12: 1.

The word "hypocrite" comes from the Greek word hupokrites and refers to someone who is acting or pretending. Among Greek and Roman theater actors it was customary to use large masks with mechanical devices to increase the strength of their voice. These actors, who hid their faces and changed their real voices, were called hypocrites.

Jesus compared the behavior of the Pharisees with that of these actors: men who pretended to be something they were not.

The Pharisees in the time of Christ were a powerful community of leaders who claimed to be more fervent and righteous than the rest of Jewish society. They established themselves as a model of what it was to be fair and godly.

Our Lord Jesus Christ addressed the subject of hypocrisy from the beginning. We can consider Matthew 6: 1-18 as the basic manual for identifying hypocrisy: the hypocrites give offerings for the purpose of being seen and admired; they pray to impress men with their voices and their words; and they do everything possible to look pathetic when they fast in order to be admired for their sacrifice and to pity them for how bad they feel.

The message of Christ to his disciples was simple: if you do things in this way, the admiration of man will be your only reward, since I will not pay attention to you and I will not listen to you.

Most Christians understand this point perfectly; It is something elementary. How often do you see someone playing a trumpet to announce his offering.

The leaven of the Pharisees is much more than mere hypocrisy; it is also his doctrine. But why is his doctrine equated to leaven? there is an undeniable relationship between the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the doctrines.

The Pharisees came to Christ and challenged him saying, "Why do not your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unclean hands?" Christ answered them: "You hypocrites, well Isaiah prophesied of you, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. For they honor me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. "

Psalm 119: 172. Let my tongue sing of your word, because all your commandments are justice.

The gospel that Jesus revealed, to guide his followers, was pure. Now, after two thousand years, we can still appreciate the purity and simplicity of the doctrine that he revealed in the New Testament. But many people are not content with adhering to this pure and unfermented truth. Centuries after Jesus' work on earth, men began to mix the gospel with other elements, creating an unholy mixture of corrupt doctrines.

I believe that the feeling of the true gospel lies in the great commandment and in the conscience that gives us the holy spirit between doing good and evil.

The condition of the Pharisees was outrageous to Jesus because they lived in appearance, the world and the Church often attached more importance to the external than to the inside of the heart of man. Good post

I believe and I have always considered that appearance is what makes man fall into a big mistake. By wanting to appear before others but forget that God knows even the deepest of our thoughts and can not be lied to.
