Beautiful Perfume

in #steemchurch5 years ago

Being at Simon's house for dinner, Christ was honored by a woman, named Mary, who poured over him all the nard contained in an alabaster glass. The whole house was filled with that wonderful perfume, attracting the attention of all those present, including the disciples, who said: "What a waste! Power would sell this perfume and give it to the poor" to which Christ replied: ".. The poor will always have you, but I, they do not always have "(Matthew 26)

This episode of rare beauty that impresses and teaches us. The act of Maria surprised everyone and even today surprises. Jesus said that where the gospel was preached, that action would be mentioned.

At that time, it was common for young girls to make their savings to buy nard, a very expensive perfume. The essence was being gathered in a glass to be used on the wedding night. Thinking about those details, we noticed how important that glass of perfume was for its owner. It represented their economies, perhaps even made with sacrifice, and also symbolized their dreams, their ideals concerning marriage and family. How much value placed and represented by a glass of perfume!

What did Maria do? He poured all that perfume on Christ. That was more than a tribute, it was a total surrender. It is as if she said: "Lord, I give you everything I am." I give the best I have, my dreams, my desires, my ideals, my plans and objectives. "It was an act of absolute dedication. he did not spill another liquid that could be cheaper and more easily obtained, like water, for example, Mary gave what she had most precious, this teaches us to give God our best, to do what is best for him, even though cost a high price.

The act of "spilling" brings us three lessons:

Exclusive Dedication - Having shed all the perfume on Jesus, Mary could no longer pay that homage to another person. Having the commitment we have with Christ, we can not have it with an idol. Nothing has remained of our perfume that can be given to another god.

Dedication without reservations - She did not keep a bit of the perfume for herself. There will be no area of our life that is not under the dominion of the Lord. We are his completely.

Dedication without return - Once spilled, the perfume could not be retaken or recovered. We do not go, tomorrow or later, to ask the Lord to give us back what we gave him. We are not going to give up our alliance with him. If we pour our soul before the Lord, we do not take it back. Our bond with Jesus is a marriage without divorce. This is how our dedication to the Lord should be. Let's deliver completely and definitely.

That wonderful aroma spread through the house and reached everyone. This is the effect of the silent witness of a life poured out in the presence of God. Even those who want to ignore it will not be able to. Before this example of detachment, some said: "What a waste!" These words can be heard even today by those who dedicate themselves to the Lord. Someone can say that we are wasting our time, our money, our youth, our life, etc. However, our dedication to God is not waste, it is investment. Everything we give to the Lord will be like a seed thrown to the ground. The act of sowing may seem wasteful. It seems that the sower is throwing out the seeds. But on the day of harvest, the worker rejoices with the fruit of his labor.

In that moment, even the poor were remembered. The fact is that any argument will be used by those who want to take our attention away from the Lord. Many want us to divert our vision of Jesus to dedicate ourselves to other causes, which may even be noble and done in the name of Christ, but they must not take God's place in our lives. It is true that when we help the poor, we are doing God's work, and we must do it, but that does not substitute a personal experience with Jesus Christ. Love of neighbor is important, but it is not everything. The first commandment is love of God. Then, if someone lives dedicating himself to social work, but is not converted or obedient to God, he is practicing dead works, without spiritual value. Charities do not have the power to save anyone. However, if we are converted and do good deeds, they have great value and we will be rewarded for them. Notice that Jesus did not condemn help to the poor. He said that we would always have the poor with us. Thus, we could always help them. However, this help does not replace our worship and dedication of life to the Lord through a commitment to obedience.

This issue also affects those who believe they can stop contributing to the church to help those who need it out. Actually, both are important and should be treated in the correct order of priorities.

What are we giving to the Lord? How are we working for his kingdom? May God help us to reach the level of doing the best, of delivering the best and of putting the Lord above everything in our lives. In this way, the good perfume of Christ will be felt everywhere you are.
