AVOIDING FUTURE REGRETS IN YOUR CAREER

Today, I served as one of the speakers in a summit for young people tagged "FAMILY WAY". The Summit is dedicated to teaching young people on Education, Career and Marriage. I spoke on Career and wish to share the lessons with you.

Satisfaction in life revolves basically around these three aspects, education, career and marriage. Within the context of education, one can get trained either formally or informally. We all have careers which define our future and livelihood. Marriage defines our present and future family affiliations. When education, career and marriage are fixed, then satisfaction in life can be assured.

Definition of terms

Career has to do with a vocation, job, occupation, profession, callin, business that one finds himself within for a long time. career‖ can also be linked to the activities and position involved in occupation, vocation and jobs as well as related activities associated with an individual’s life time.

Regret means remorse, guilt repentance, shame, disapointment, sorrow, distress. The word regret comes into our vocabulary wheneever we do anything in in either the wrong time, wrong place, wrong method or the combination of two or all of the above.

What to do to avoid future regrets in Career

1. Plan

For success in career we need to plan and decide before enrolling. Career planning has to do with..

• self-assessment
• analysis of opportunities
• evaluation of results to aid the decision to embark on a particular career

Taking decision while planning for a career is an ongoing process that can help a student or trainee to manage learning and development. It is the continuous process of thinking about your interests, values, skills and preferences; exploring the life, work and learning options available to you; ensuring that your work fits with your personal circumstances; and continuously fine-tuning your work and learning plans to help you manage the changes in your life and the world of work.

2. Seek Career counselling

Career counselling involves the following:

• exposure to occupational information;
• cognitive rehearsal of vocational aspirations;
• acquisition of some cognitive structure for organizing information about self, occupations and their relations; and
• social support or reinforcement from counsellors or workshop members.

From the scriptural perspective: God has made provision for counselling either directly from him or through his vessels.

Deuteronomy32: 28:

For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.

Proverbs 11: 14:

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

However, within the christian context, caution must be ensured to confirm that only Godly counsel is received.

Psalm 1: 1:

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful

The best counsel/counselor is God through His word
Psalm 33: 1:

The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Psalm 73: 24

Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

2 Timothy 3: 16-17

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

3. Get the preliminary skills

Our case study in the person of David had already gathered skills in leadership and as a shepherd in the bush as a young before coming to the scene. See his testimony in
1Sam 17: 34 - 37, CEV:

But David told him: Your Majesty, I take care of my father's sheep. And when one of them is dragged off by a lion or a bear, I go after it and beat the wild animal until it lets the sheep go. If the wild animal turns and attacks me, I grab it by the throat and kill it. Sir, I have killed lions and bears that way, and I can kill this worthless Philistine. He shouldn't have made fun of the army of the living God! he LORD has rescued me from the claws of lions and bears, and he will keep me safe from the hands of this Philistine. "All right," Saul answered, "go ahead and fight him. And I hope the LORD will help you."

We can only get the preliminary skills if we understand the times, the time to learn, the time to sow, the time to be an apprentice - Genesis 8: 22

4. Learn to prioritize

In life, even God did not fail to prioritize creation. The things created from being good to being very good after creating man. Success in career starts with the ability to do the first things first.

• You need God and His kingdom first
• You need wisdom
• You need training
• You need head empowerment before hand empowerment
• Above all, trust in the Lord with all your heart...
