MARRIAGE DISCOURSE - OWN IT UP, STOP THE BLAME GAME

Introduction

Today, we find ourselves in a world where people consciously make excuses for their inability to do a particular thing. When things go wrong, nobody wants to own up. Everyone wants to be the "good guy". However, does this really help man achieve dreams? What about the wounds it creates on relationships? Doen't this attitude reduce the effectiveness of collaboration and mutual efforts? The above questions roused my heart while in a Bible study class yesterday and I wish I can share what I learnt with everyone here on my niche. The post is open for discussions questions and interraction. Lets get the discourse on!

“Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things". Romans 2:1, KJV

“Do you, my friend, pass judgment on others? You have no excuse at all, whoever you are. For when you judge others and then do the same things which they do, you condemn yourself". Romans 2:1, GNB

The emphasis of the discussion was on the responsibilities in marriage. Considering the word “responsibility”, the study detailed that the parties involved in marriage should be matured. Maturity in this context was expressed in terms of words: (being) liable, trustworthy.

  • To be liable means to be accountable, answerable, own-up to a mistake
  • To be trustworthy means to be dependable, one whom something can be committed into his/her hands

The Responsibilities

Ephesians 5:21 – Submission, be the servant. Servanthood here implies that both parties have responsibilities to shoulder and they must be willing to serve in the areas of their responsibilities for the marriage to work.

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. (Ephesians 5:21, KJV)
Submit yourselves to one another because of your reverence for Christ. . (Ephesians 5:21, GNB)

Note the emphasis in the test above. King James Version conditions the submission with “in the fear of God”. This phrase as expressed in the Good News Bible is stated thus “because of your reverence for Christ”. The submission may have not been necessary, yet, because the parties are demanded to fear and reverence God, they must submit. This submission in the fear of God is what gives God a hand in the business.

Conversely, where submission is not obtainable, pride, which is the tendency of resisting divine instruction, will set in. Our submission must be subject to God’s demands and not compromising against God’s standards.

Further, we have to understand that submission is impossible without the life of Christ. See Galatians 2:20:

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me (KJV)

Every partner submitting in marriage must see his/herself as submitting to God’s instructions.

The headship of the man as a metaphor to Christ being the head of the church, should be well understood that headship of Christ was well expressed in His willingness to let go His Godly deity to take upon the form of a servant (Philippians 2: 7). He gave up His life for man. In Matthew 20: 26 and 23:11, Jesus admonished that the greatest (leader) must be the servant of all.

To be continued...
