It can create a really good design. Why hassle in hard coding design when you can do this easily?

It is also customizable wherein it can provide a flexible foundation for innovation and brand expression.

Pros:
By including a new dimension it is easier for the user to understand the hierarchy. From a first glance it is much easier to understand.
By having rules for almost every detail is easily usable, regardless of the device for which we are designing.
Animations are a strong point to use to extrapolate to other points of the design.
Cons:
The material design is an invention of Google, so it is intrinsically linked to it. If we follow their guidelines, our website or application may look too much like Google's design.
Because the guidelines are so clearly marked, we can not use creativity so much.
The animations clearly make a higher battery consumption.
