Hunter's comment

What Elon Musk is not able to do, this Dutch company ZEP is delivering to the market already for a number of year: ELEGANT Solar powered Roofs.

With the increase in demand by home owners to contribute to clean energy, we see more and more these ugly solar panels fitted to houses and office buildings.

ZEP took the next step: Apple-fide the solar roof, by integrating the solar panel into the standard roof tile. This results in hundreds to thousands of little solar panels per roof, which are all connected to the home energy grid.

The roof tiles are delivered in the standard formats and colours used in Europe: Black, Grey/Silver-ish, Red.

The product delivers 9 Watt-peak per tile, which calculates to about 90 Watt-peak per square meter, or about 10 square foot.

The product has all the certifications required for Europe through the CE certification. It also has the well recognised TÜV certificate.

Detailed product specification here.

I'm often looking into solar panels since they are so interesting and self-sustainable but, as you pointed out, all of the ones that are on the market, are ugly. I was waiting for something more beautiful but, this is completely next level, I think it's brilliant.

Keep on hunting.

remember to hunt really your best finds on the web, we want the site to be fully of quality awesome products that people will love!

some power tips for the next hunt.. .

  • use animated gifs up to 10mb

  • write your opinions about the product
  • comment pro and cons on other hunts
  • upvote and resteem your favs of the day
  • write a blog post about your top 5/10/25 :)

Great way to sustain energy in our homes. The panels are well placed on the roof to ensure maximum absorbent of solar energy.

Awesome Hunt!

Nice Hunt!
Pros:

  • It comes in different color options.
  • It looks more appealing than conventional panels.
  • In case of damage repair is easier just swap out the bad tile.

Cons:

  • It is expensive and would only make sense if you were building a new house and would want to use solar roof tiles.

This is called 'Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV)" in short, our research laboratory is working on that too :) we are trying to make transparent solar cells so that can fit into your windows and provide both, sunlight and energy harvesting, eventually our homes would be self-sustaining

How cool, these windows you talk about. I heard of some students from Delft University in Netherlands who created also a solar window; They use some kind of coating to diffract the solar rays to the sides of the window at which small solar collectors are placed. At first they where only able to use colours such as blue, red, green, but since last year they seem to be able to make the transparent coating.

How will the solar window you are working on, work?

Thats a nice idea too, i saw their mechanism but that requires a lot of angle diffraction and it should be accurate in order to be received by the photocollectors. The one we are working on is actually amorphous Silicon based, a very thin (10-20 nm) film of this silicon is almost 90% transparent, so it would not block/diffract/reflect back any light. And, you wont have to worry about cleaning, moving window up or down or changing its angle :) It is kind of already in progress, we are trying to improve transmission and efficiency, which is the main problem right now, the efficiency is maximum 20% by far. If we go up to 45% you can literally use all appliances of a whole room with 1 window

Sounds really cool! When do you expect to have this on the market?

Lolz that would take some time. Actually, we are just university research lab, and we do not actually sell or have shop or plant, we just research, forward it to the companies and they make a plan for product :) So, we are like scientists only. But, i guess it would maximum take a year

Ok Ok :) I suppose an opportunity for some business to get a product on the market when you guys are successful :)

again design thinking at heart, I think they have creatively bridged the gap, having your tiles as solar panels can be efficient in some places .though I think proper calculations need to be done for its efficiency

Wow. Great hunt. It is important to meets with energy problems. And theae tiles are important part of this.

Wow excellent hunt

Pros

Using solar we generate power
You fix this panel on roof of our house
You generate power for our needs

Cons

None
