For people who have a disability that prevents them from walking, mobility can be a daily challenge. But now, thanks to the development of a Russian company, they can move on virtually any surface, including stairs, in an "all-terrain" wheelchair.
CaterWil is behind this new product that has just arrived on the market and which promises to prevent people in this situation from continuing to depend on the infrastructure designed specifically for wheelchairs.
The engineers of the company assure that their invention offers total autonomy, even in front of obstacles and stairs.
CaterWil was born in 2012 when a friend of Ivan Nevzorov, founder of the company, explained how difficult it is to climb stairs in a conventional wheelchair. "I, at that time, recently graduated from a technological university, accepted it as a challenge," he told Sputnik.
Thus, the young engineer decided to devote his free time to find the configuration that would allow a wheelchair to overcome this difficulty combining at the same time "viability, safety and relative technological simplicity".
Nevzorov found inspiration in the caterpillars, whose way of moving translated into a system that allows the device to mount and dismount steps.
The first prototype saw light in 2013 and, in 2014, the company CaterWil was registered. Finally the mass production started in 2016 and last year the all-terrain wheelchair reached its first markets.
Today, CaterWil offers two different models: the GTS3 and the GTS3 EXPORT. Each of these is customized by the user when ordering the chair on the company's website, so the price may vary.
