In biological researches, specially human, many animals and even cadavers are butchered and sacrificed as guinea pigs. In spite of the sacrifice and expenses, breakthrough researches can take years and years thus needing more guinea pigs for testing. That may not be applicable all the time which can hamper the progress of the research. This is were the Organs-On-Chip comes in.
Wyss Institute researchers engineered what they describe as:
microfluidic culture devices that recapitulate the microarchitecture and functions of living human organs, including the lung, intestine, kidney, skin, bone marrow and blood-brain barrier, among others. - Source -
With this chip, it can replace the need for human organs for researchers because the chip can emulate the organs.
