One of the many successes in finding solutions to problems that our planet faces today is this sand battery which was discovered by the developer while lying on the beach with sand all around him.

Researchers from University of California, Riverside (UCR) have developed a low-cost and eco-friendly battery that is based on sand but with three times longer life span than regular batteries.

The sand was purified, processed with salt and magnesium to remove oxygen and become pure nano-silicon. This nano-silicon formed in a very porous silicon which is the added advantage. The porosity of the nano-silicon has been proven to be the key to improving performance of batteries made with nano-silicon. This improved performance means increasing the expected lifespan of batteries up to three times.

With the initial success, the researchers planned to produce larger quantities and move from coin-size batteries to pouch-size batteries for mobile phones.

Great innovation for the mankind. It feels exciting to read the entire story on how Zachary Favors got the idea on his mind. If this capability is coming live soon, then electric vehicles will have much more capacity to run on a single charge, and it will increase adoption of electric vehicles, which in turn will reduce oil usage. That has potential to change the game in economy as well.

I love your analysis of the domino effect and on a large scale! Yes, this will be a game changer if made commercially and globally available.

The battery technology is one of the most important one at the moment. This sounds like an interesting concept. Tree times more battery life. Will go for that. Hope they continue with their work and bring it to the masses.

Indeed. I too hope that this becomes widely available and affordable soon.

So is it only the anode of the battery that are developed as nano silicon?
Well, it's a good discovery to find a better replacement for the commonly used graphite and this can go a long way in improving the quality of batteries.
I would really love to see my smartphone battery using more than thrice it's performance span.

Agree. With the very fast discharging of smartphone batteries these days, I guess everyone would love a longer battery performance.

CONGRATULATIONS...!

One of the main problem with the eletric vehicles and solar off grid set ups is the battery. While they make these batteries and also after when they will be broken. I mean as far as i know the building of the batteries are jot much eco friendly and after they use it they also polluting the environment. So with this innovation again we can make one step front to be more eco friendly and that is good.
Hope soon we will see more and more products like this.
Very good hunt @macoolette!
Congrats!

As far as I too know, the regular batteries are not environmental friendly. I remember one has a warning about proper disposal however most people will ignore that and treat it like just a regular waste.

Indeed, may this product become widely available and affordable for everyone.

Howdy there macoolette! Oh this is very interesting indeed! Three times longer it lasts, very impressive. This is very superior!

This is an amazing discovery! Quite the achievement to create energy from sand, one of the most abundant materials on earth. There is great strides being made in battery tech but this one is the most unique. I love this Hunt! Thanks macoolete

Indeed, it is great to see discoveries like this and make use of something that is usually regarded as just nothing.

Thank you for dropping by.

Wow! A new solution to real problem. Who would have though there would be a battery powered by sand. This will revolutionise how we see tech. I am still wowed. Kudos to the brains behind this.

Moved to the Hive platform.

Wow! That is a cool info and news to me. I did not know that so thanks for sharing. So I guess our researchers should look at desert sand with their discoveries.

Congratulations!
