Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that affects the eyes of diabetic patients which can cause vision impairment and eventually blindness. Because of diabetes, the blood vessels of the retina are damaged which causes this disease. According to a research, diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of blindness. Diabetes affects the retina gradually and patients are unaware of their visual impairement (Source)

IDx-DR is an AI-based diagnostic device for the autonomous detection of diabetic retinopathy. It is the first and the only FDA authorized AI system. 

The device can be used to diagnose the disease without confirmation from the specialist. According to Michael Abràmoff, the founder of IDx-DR, "It makes the clinical decisions completely on its own".

Thus, IDx-DR is an innovative clinical device that can be used by any medical staff member who knows how to operate it. It is easy to use, requiring minimal operator training. Therefore, it can help prevent premature vision loss due to diabetes.

          Pros:-

          • Diagnose the disease without confirmation from the specialist avoid long waiting time for a specialist consultation
          • Easy for medical personnels to learn how to operate it
          • After capturing the image of both eyes, it takes less than a min to know the result
          • Preventive measures can be implemented asap once detected

          Cons:-

          • Cost of the product
          • Unable to consult further with the report directly as the machine is unlike a specialist where we can ask on the spot
