The Mars Helicopter, a small, autonomous rotorcraft, will travel with the agency’s Mars 2020 rover mission, currently scheduled to launch in July 2020, to demonstrate the viability and potential of heavier-than-air vehicles on the Red Planet.
Flying a helicopter on Mars may seem to be an ordinary task, but it's not due to three reasons
- Mars atmosphere is just 1% dense as of earth, so to fly a helicopter there, it needs to be super strong(3,000 rpm) and ultra light.
- Autonomous flight due to time delay between Earth and Mars.
- Most robust landing system for harsh Martian conditions.
This helicopter will be deployed via Mars Rover and it will fly upto a few hundred meters for 90sec.
- It will help rover to look beyond its line of sight.
- Solar panel on top of rotors will charge it.
- Total autonomous flight.

Solar panel charging caught my eye! I suppose it will play it's role in the exploration process! Nice!
