French Finance Minister Borno Le Mer said a 3 percent tax on France's major Internet companies could generate a return of 500 million euros a year.

Le Mer told Le Parisien newspaper that the tax targets companies that generate a global return of digital activities of at least 750 million euros and a return of at least 25 million euros in France.

He said the tax would target some 30 companies, most of them US companies, but also Chinese, German, Spanish and British companies as well as French and French companies before they were acquired by foreign companies.
The newspaper cited the names of companies including Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple, as well as companies such as Ober, IRBN, Bocking and Cretio.

"The tax system of the 21st century must be built on what is the value of the day, the data," said Le Mire.

"It's also about financial justice," he said. "Digital giants pay 14 percent less than European small and medium-sized companies."

Tax justice is one of the main demands of the Yellow Jackets movement, which has staged protests across France over the past three months.
