The United Nations on Wednesday called on the French authorities to conduct an investigation into the "use of excessive force" against yellow jacket protesters who have been demonstrating in the streets since mid-November.

"We encourage the French government to continue the dialogue and call for an in-depth investigation into all cases of excessive use of force to be reported," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michel Bachelet said in a speech to the Human Rights Council in Geneva. "He said.

With this statement, the United Nations joins European and European human rights organizations that have expressed concern about the violence perpetrated by the French police against the yellow jackets.

In January, EU Commissioner for Human Rights Dunga Mijatovic said she had visited Paris, where she discussed with the authorities "the violence practiced by security during the demonstrations, including the exposure of journalists."
At the beginning of January, supporters of the Yellow Jackets movement sent a letter to President Emmanuel Macaron condemning the "excessive and unjustified violence used by security during the protests."

The demonstrations of yellow jackets in France, in mid-November last, in protest against raising fuel prices in the country, and quickly turned into a movement against Macaron's economic and social policies.

Ten people died in incidents related to these protests, while some 2,000 others were injured, while some 6,000 were held by French security agents.
