Steemit account creation: why is SP required?

Here is an interesting discussion of how new Steemit accounts are created by @rycharde:

A Solution to Onboarding New Steemians that Benefits Everyone

One thing I am not sure I fully understand is why a new account mandatorily needs to have STEEM capital in it to function. I think it would be perfectly fine to have people - those who choose not to purchase themselves some STEEM

  • couldn't start out at zero. Yes, there votes would be worth nothing until they create something valuable enough for the community to reward them with some STEEM through upvotes.

All comments on this are welcome as always. I personally believe zero-STEEM accounts must be allowed to exist - and in fact may be our ticket to rapidly building a far larger community.

Yes it sounds like a great idea to onboard lots of new users.

It is necessary to make Steemit a serious social network. Hate to say it, but so long as Facebook got us 100 to 1 as far as user count (at least) we won't be able to beat them.

Congratz, your post has been resteemed and, who knows, will maybe appear in the next edition of the #dailyspotlights (Click on my face if you want to know more about me...)

I agree with you,

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

More importantly, not everyone is willing to invest into something they have yet to try.

I think it is very difficult to start from scratch. Now getting rewarded for posting or commenting is very difficult. In the end, people just leave. Of course, it is better to invest, especially since Steam has a future.

Difficult or not - why not make it a possibility?

Plus, if your content stands out and people like it - I feel like there's nothing in the way of them upvoting your content, re-steeming you, making you famous - and potentially rich, too.

Excellent review, my friend and you are right to get something, you need to invest something! Thank you Boris

You got a 62.38% upvote from @brupvoter courtesy of @borepstein!

The amount of Steempower you have dictates how much Resource Credits or RC's (votes, comments, Steem monsters games) you can use on the blockchain.

If you could transact without SP the amount of SPAM would be enormous putting tremendous strain on the blockchain (adding many more transactions).

RC's limit this SPAM.

Basically: If you want to transact more on the Steem blockchain you will need more Steempower.

That is a concern for sure.

Yet perhaps even that can be managed - as in, at zero you get 3 posts/comments a day or some such. What to post more? Get yourself some STEEM.

I think this sort of policy is certainly something we need to consider.

I'm glad you say that because that is already the case!

Steem is the only Freemium blockchain in the blockchain space where you can transact without having the token itself. Yet, it is very limited. (A couple of upvotes or a comment before you run out.) After that you need SP.

Pretty cool right!

But do we allow Steemit account creation without STEEM?

To be honest with you, I am a little concerned by the fact that for what feels like eternity (a few months at least) it seems like we are stuck at a little under 1.2 million accounts and not growing.

No, it will cause the same Spam problem. Accounts will be massively farmed when they are free and then used to Spam the blockchain with the little RC's they have.

Or it will create a horrible user experience where new users run out of RC's rather quickly and they have to buy STEEM.

I much prefer:

With initiatives like Steem Monsters (account creation + Starterpack) or steem ninja accounts are created the smart way with FIAT. It's also instant and you get a little delegation so you don't run into RC problems.

I believe the reason we are not growing has more to do with the price of STEEM then anything else imho.

The blockchain will explode when the markets turn.

One point I can't agree with you on is that the low price of STEEM is a significant cause of the current slowdown. If anything, given how cheap STEEM is, if I were interested in joining the community now I would be more likely to shell out the cash to get me some STEEM at 0.27 USD than I would at 3 USD.

Otherwise, you may be right - we may indeed need to maintain some barrier to entry to prevent Spam abuse. But that barrier to entry should not be too high, obviously.
