Getting some initial exposure and upvotes can be very challenging for new accounts on Steemit. The learning curve is very steep and new blogs often give up early because this platform rarely gives instant results after an initial introduction post.

This series of posts can be seen as a step by step guide of things that can be done by anyone who starts out on Steemit to build up their post earnings over time...

7. Steemit Upvotes | Bid Bots ✅

Bid Bots on Steemit are basically accounts who are holding a lot of steem power who are selling their votes by allowing people to bid on them. This concept has totally exploded and many accounts started selling their upvotes this way because it is the most efficient way to make money in a way that is socially acceptable. Because the Supply in bid bots increased more than the demand, it is possible to actually use them profitably and increase your overall post earnings. The subject of bid bots on this platform is quite controversial on this platform, but I will try to analyze them for what they are...

Steembottracker.com is a website made by Steemit witness @yabapmatt . It lists many of the upvote bots and services that can be found on Steemit and tracks the timing and upvote values. There are currently 60+ different bid bots listed and tracked on this website and there are a lot of filters.

The bots themselves can be divided in two categories.

  • The High Upvote Value BotsThey are mainly used (abused) to artificially get posts on top of the main trending page to get bigger exposure and anyone can pretty much do this regardless the post quality. The minimum bit is usually higher on these bots and they are unlikely to give a direct return on your money .

big bots.jpg

  • The Lower Upvote Value Bots They are more used by minnows and at times give a good return on your money. The minimum bid is often set at 0.1 SBD and most of them will leave a message on your posts saying it has been upvoted by the bot.

The main question when asking the profitability question is if gaining Steem Power by directly is better compared to Buying Upvotes. Since posts are paid out 7 days after a post is made, this is directly related to the price of SBD in Relation to the price of STEEM at the time of payout. Since both pretty much move in similar ways, this is not that big of an issue in real life.

The amount of bids that come in is the main factor that makes using bid bots profitable or not. Even though I did not do an extensive study on this, I assume that specific times during the day see less bids because less people are active on the platform.

I tested many of the smaller bots out around the moring in Europe which seems to be a good timing since it is early in Europe and in the middle of the night in the US. All bid bots I used were send the same 0.10 SBD amount at the time there was no sign of marginal edge or overbidding. some were send close to when the upvote was being done, others well ahead. SBD Prise at the time was was 2.79$ payouts shown need to be done around +40% (which is the netto result after subtracting the curation and counting the premium price for SBD). The same 0.1 SBD bid gave upvote amounts between 0.20$ and 0.44$. !

It is not easy to just bid on the bots that will give a highest return even when waiting very late before the clock runs out while there is an overall underbid. More might use this strategy which can quickly slash the edge. When you use them at the right time of the day and spread your bids around, they can really help you grow quicker on this platform compared to just powering up.

Some reasons why Bid Bots can be used

  • Increased SP Growth
If you manage to use bid bots profitable they can really help you grow your Steem Power faster compared to powering up.
  • Higher Post Earnings
Using bid bots make your post payouts at least look a lot higher which might be more motivation because it gives the feeling you are earning something.
  • Increased Reputation
Using bid bots is a big artificial boost of your reputation and in the end, many users still take higher reputations much more serious by default.
  • More Exposure
Higher post payouts puts you above on the tag trending pages which could get you more exposure helping you grow faster because there is a bigger chance of getting followers.
  • More Curation Rewards for real Upvoters
When using Upvotes bots 24h or later after a post was made, everyone who showed support by upvoting your post easy will get higher curation rewards. This might for some be a reason to be a bit more generous with their upvotes if they know this.

  • Antisocial
Bid bots have nothing to do with the social aspect of this entire platform. It is all very cold and meaningless but they unfortunably have become an inevitable part Steemit.
  • Empty Post Rewards
most of the post rewards by bid bots are just recycled. A post earns SBD which is put back in another post which also earns SBD. This makes the gap between adding all the individual post earnings up and the actual growth quite big.
  • Bot Spam Comments
Nearly all bid bots post a comment below the post they upvoted which makes interaction in the commens much more difficult and gives some kind of Stamp of shame on your posts. I personally really dislike bid-bot posts in my comments.

There is a list on Steembottracker.com with other Upvote bots that I have not fully taken a look at. One of them is @earthnation-bot which is designed only for minnows and gives a massive 4X Upvote once every 7 days.

Like it or not, Bid bots exist and can help new members to grow faster. Once you start getting some post earnings, the SBD can be used to artificially increase new post earnings and get a positive return on them by using bid bots. Finding a good balance is probably key when using these services.

Well you probably are aware of my feelings towards them at present, and the above is a fair assessment of what they can do for new accounts, and the impression more seasoned accounts have towards them.

I've used them in the past for the reasons above, and stopped using them also for the reasons above 😊

It's a free market, each certainly to their own. Cheers!

@abh12345 I'm here to sing the praises to the bid bots!

By defending them as a marketing tool I got to know a lot of folks on steemit 😄

@costanza nothing to add really. You did a great job listing the pros and the cons. I've used them and paid some good money for their services during my career, perhaps even 5 SBD 😄

I don't like the comments they leave and the feeling that I'm spinning my wheels. Also, having Asher frowning when he sees what I do to the reward pool... h-guy has nothing on me 😄

haha :)

Yeah small time users clearly aren't the issue - although every little helps eh.

I will write a post at some point showing the complete history of my affair with the bots. I wrote a lot about maximizing profits, strange events, and of course more recently, why they are a detriment to the platform.

I tend not to support posts that have been bot boosted these days, and would rather check the #nobidbot tag and support those posts.

I understand, as a person who loves a flutter, the appeal though - visibility is whatever, but if there's a profit to eek out then i'm usually not far away. Imagine how itchy my fingers are these days when i see a bidding round ripe for the taking! :D

I'm looking forward to your post about it asher!

Bidbots used to be really good when they first started - you could actually make a profit.

Then they became terrible with frequent 20% or more losses and fuelled a ton of last minute voting and spamming.

Now a '10% return' seems to be the norm. You make a loss on the SBD but make a little on the steem side. I view it as subsidizing my steem purchases lol.

Great write up on the topic of bidbots, @costanza.

I used to imply them a lot. Now I have retired from using these services. I cast no aspersions on those that continue. As abh12345 said, to each his own.

I just didn't see the value. There was certainly the increase in REP score, but financially, it just didn't seem worth it to me. And I really don't like the comments left. It made me feel spammy.
