Have you ever stopped to think about the comment section of something a little more mainstream such as YouTube to be closer to the historical accurate representation of what a performer would endure? I’m sure we’ve all encountered trolls as they would be called now but there was a day when it was the performers job to captivate the audience for the sake of being able to finish the performance.

In those days if you did not keep the audiences attention it was almost guaranteed to have something thrown at you, sometimes even when you did have an amazing performance. We have been stuck in a situation with a lot of the main stream productions having the mentality to clap and applaud whether or not the outcome is actually that grand. Till recently with things like Reddit and YouTube where people can feel free to express their opinions openly without having to fear the backlash of their little social circles we have had a muzzle on criticism.

Back then the upper echelon on the above decks watching something like Shakespeare did not come merely for the performance but largely for the reaction the crowd would have. It was all considered part of the entertainment in the same way when you stop in on someone’s work often reading through the reaction in the comments is part of the post. Sometimes the comments are even more entertaining than the actual production, this is why I consider trolls per say to be a necessity and even though they may not have good things to say it is all part of the show!

I appreciate every comment I get. I try to respond and interact with every individual in the same way it was the responsibility of the performers on stage to keep their audience subdued enough to be able to finish the performance in the first place. The only real difference now is that unless you are doing a live stream the back-and-forth between the audience and the performer is done after the fact of the performance but ultimately it has the same affect, it’s all just part of the performance guys.
