Why the current self-upvote + curation rewards system is bad
Here comes the jumpscare!
Are you aware of the 30 minute rule? Right now, the earlier you upvote anyone's post, the higher is the share of your curation rewards automatically donated to the author. If you upvote something at minute 0, you get no curation rewards, it is all donated.
Are you aware of the upvote weight rule? Upvote order and value matter. But basically, if someone upvotes themselves for $1 at minute 0 and you upvote them for $0.2, regardless of when you upvote, because your upvote is so much smaller than what is already on the post (in this case, $1), the other curators, including the author, absorb most of your curation rewards.
Let's say someone self-upvotes for $10 at minute 0. Your upvote's curation rewards will get completely taken away. You will earn 0.001 sp when that post is paid out. On the other hand, if you upvote something for $0.01 at, say, minute 15, no other upvotes have been cast, and a whale upvotes the same thing for $10, you're gonna get MUCH more than 0.01 SP from the rewards because you voted first and the $ value of your upvote was relevant to curation back then.
Because of the negative side of this, Hardfork 20 is updating how things work.
