Minnow #541,753—Monthly Report: March

in #steemit6 years ago

I've Got A New Attitude

It took a while to get here, but while there was not any significant jump in rewards in April, other stats did jump. I think the increases in those stats will actually lead to better days. So far into May, that theory seems to be holding.

But first, let's talk April, and save May for another day.

Quick Summary

Curie did not come by this month, but OCD did, providing a nice boost to a post. In general, though, the rise in STEEM prices over the course of the month helped out quite a bit, as the ghost town feeling of March apparently was reversed by people coming back. Or those who stayed being willing to do a little more rewarding. Whatever the case, more posts and comments began to see more rewards.

The best thing about April, however, was something I alluded to near the end of last month's report. It will get mentioned again, probably near the end of this month's report.

And since I've already done the teasing, I'll be eliminating that section for now and moving on.

Posts (no comments)—43

The number of posts were off four from last month. I didn't always post on Saturdays, none on Sundays, but tried to post at least an average of twice a day. Counting 22 post days in April, I didn't quite make two per day.

Comments—1,235

This represents over a threefold increase in comments, by far the highest total. The most comments in a given week were 314, with 83 comments being the top for one day. On average, using 25 commenting days as the measure, there were 49.4 comments.

Upvotes given—261/1764

Again, these numbers were up significantly over last month. The number of different people receiving upvotes increased by 55, while the number of upvotes went up by 761. STEEM prices had a lot to do with that, as per upvote rewards were able to be stretched farther. However, the same contributing factor mentioned above led to the significant increase, just as it did with comments. More on that below.

Upvotes received—340/1345

For the first time in two months, the number of people voting on my posts decreased significantly, a drop of 182 under the prior month's record. However, the total upvote amount increased by nearly 350, meaning that fewer people upvoted, but did so more frequently.

Average upvotes per user were just under four. Top upvotes by single user, 106.

SP increased—59.107

After a disappointing increase of SP in March, April's amount ticked up by nearly 13 SP. The rise in STEEM prices helped for at least half of the month. But like comments and upvotes, there was another contributing factor.

All told, the total increase in SP since January 1 through posting, commenting, and curating is 240.724, or a monthly average of just over 60 SP.

Highest single payout—7.284 SBD/1.855 SP

This came from the aforementioned post curated by OCD, entitled We Should Be More Like Tulips. A trip to a tulip festival turned into a philosophical treatise comparing how tulips act around each other with the way humans do.

The original intent of the trip to see the tulips was to get away and spend some time with my wife, my daughter-in-law and our granddaughter, as well as an opportunity to report out on the tulips. However, after looking through the pictures I'd taken while there, I was struck with the idea to get a little bit deeper with the post. I'm glad I did.

Self upvotes—0

Once again, no accidental self-upvoting occurred during April, bringing the total number of accident free months to two.

Contests—4

Here's where the increases shown and the new attitude hinted at earlier derive. As mentioned last month, I became a member of @abh12345's Curation and Engagement Leagues. Since reporting a No. 3 finish late last month, I reached the No. 1 spot three weeks in a row (with a league-wide bye week accounting for the fourth full week). In order to do so, my commenting, total character length over all comments, and upvoting needed to increase dramatically. So, they did.

I am really enjoying being a part of the leagues, particularly the engagement one (since I don't have a decent handle on the curation league yet). I personally believe it's just what Steemit needs, but that's a topic for another post.

Flags Recieved—0

Didn't really put myself in harms way, nor did my rewards reach the flagging point. A good combination.

Flags given—0

No flags given in April. I didn't run across any other phishing scams that weren't already noted.

Followers—315-ish

Why I can't remember to check this stat at the end of the month is beyond me. Suffice it to say though, there was a significant increase in followers from March's end—more than 100, or over 50%. Getting out and commenting and consistently posting helped tremendously.

Reputation rating—53

For what it's ultimately worth, my reputation rating increased by two points over the course of April. Boosts were incremental as no major SP voted, and the curation trail was lighter.

Investment—$0

I made no further investments in STEEM in April. It's unlikely to happen, unless STEEM falls well below $2 USD again from its current price of well over $3.50 USD.

Miscellaneous

Outworlder #1, my 32-year-old all pencil graphic novel finished its run in April, which included a post with all 48 pages and cover together. Overall, I would call the experiment a success, given I wasn't expecting much to begin with. I have not totaled up the amounts received in rewards, but may do so for another post.

I'm not sure if I will replace it with the novel I wrote based on the comic book or not.

The Maya continues to publish every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Grandpa Gotta Cook/Eat series also continued, with a few more outdoorsy posts than previously published appearing. I guess that's what happens when the sun comes out and the temperatures rise.

That concludes this month's report for Minnow #541,753. Until next month...

Sort:

I do like the idea of keeping statistcal data. There is one metric, however, that is missing to me and that is time spent on the platform.

Yeah. I only measure it in days, but maybe it would be more appropriate to include the hours. It's normally between 10-14 hours a day. Just depends on how many interruptions I have, or if there's something planned. I don't do Steemit on Sundays, and Saturdays can be half days. I generally work around my wife's schedule. So long days are normally Tuesday-Thursday, with Monday having me do laundry, take out and retrieve the trash bins and other various and sundry chores. Friday has more laundry. And of course, there's all the miscellaneous things like breaks, trips to the bathroom, eating, etc.

So, I'd say, all told, I'm on Steemit around 76 hours a week, give or take.

That's a rather exhausting answer but then again, what else to expect from you. :)

No wonder you are making so much progress.

Stats!

I like me some stats :)

Hoping for a slow but exponential rise in your fortune/s, good luck!

Yeah, but my stats aren't anywhere near as sophisticated as your stats, and rely quite heavily on pencil marks on paper and some guess work. Even so, I believe the report to be pretty accurate. :)

I appreciate very much the well-wishing, especially since you're a significant part of the slow but exponential rise right now, between the leagues and your upvotes. Thank you. I know I'm doing some work, but I'm just grateful for the weekly push. I certainly wasn't doing it on my own. :)

Your hard work and commitment are paying off. You are certainly an example for me to follow. Don't know if I can keep up with the number of posts you do each day. Holy cow! Anyway, does my heart good to see you do well. blessings.

Thank you for all the kind words. Not sure how much of an example I am, but I'll take your word for it. The key word here for posting is 'time.' There needs to be time to do it. Otherwise, it doesn't really happen. As it is, I can barely keep up with it. Need to see if I can pump out three tomorrow and then again on Friday so I'm not stuck posting on Saturday when less people are around (except in the earlier morning).

Dragos Roua's writing challenge is helping with subject matter, so that's good. Just need to keep up with him and the difference in time zones. :)

Nice job Minnow #541,753

Looks like you've got a very good handle on things with all those KPIs. Maybe you're bound to become that benchmark guy?

Maybe if it's only my own benchmarks. :)

I'm sure there's plenty of you all doing much more than me. My main concern is to try to improve as much as possible each month, and barring that, maintain a high level of whatever. I know time is a major requirement in any worthwhile endeavor, so patience is a benchmark I need to measure too, probably :)

You have been a part of my growth here, just like everyone else that's commented here so far. Between your own engaging posts and comments, as well as the gracious and generous upvotes, you're making these numbers possible in the first place. I know I have to do work, too. I'm just saying it doesn't matter if I'm merely playing to the void. You all have definitely been overcoming the void for me. :)

I look at followers and keep an eye on my incoming vote count and comment count. I used to look at views too before that got removed from the Steemit UI :(

I know what you mean about overcoming the void. Sometimes it feels like we're just shouting into the ether and hoping someone will hear us. But we are getting closer and finding each other every day. It's enough cause for optimism :)

I very much agree with that. So far, it's been changing and hopefully that continues. I've been more optimistic about things lately. Not necessarily in Steemit, but securing my place in it. Whatever that truly means. I'd hope anyway that there's a niche for all of us here who wants to and has the ability to provide good content.

re: page counter

I wish they would come up with a unique view counter. I guess that's harder to do but the page counter they had was at least better than nothing.

Great work mate. You've made some real progress over the past month! Especially with the followers. I'll have to check out this engagement league that you're part of.

Onwards and upwards. :)

I think I did make progress this month. I'd love SP to increase faster, but I can see the incremental improvement and have a better idea on how to get there, so we'll see what the next few months bring.

The followers kind of took off. I can't say engagement with new folks has been on the rise, though, so who knows who these people might be. A couple are larger and have come around. Most are smaller and don't.

Definitely check out the leagues. Here's a link if you want to see the latest results page. You can actually sign up for both (it's a two-fer deal) leaving a request to sign up in a comment on the post. Asher will set you up. :)

Congratulations! Your post has been selected as a daily Steemit truffle! It is listed on rank 6 of all contributions awarded today. You can find the TOP DAILY TRUFFLE PICKS HERE.

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 42 SBD worth and should receive 99 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.

Interesting post @glenalbrethsen. I'm not sure why I've not seen your month end report before. I'll be on the look out from now on.

Have you written about your investments in Steem anywhere. I'd be interested to see when and how much you invested and what difference you felt it made.

I agree 50% with Asher and wish you a fast and exponential rise in your fortune/s!

But even more I wish you to keep enjoying what you're doing! 😍

It's probably a matter of timing, really. Posts easily slip through unseen.

Aside from the month end reports, I think there might be one other where I talk about the hoops you have to jump through to even invest in STEEM. That doesn't really talk about how I think things have improved or not with an investment.

The truth is, though, as the SP goes higher, the portion of the reward pool we control goes higher, too. And I don't see another way to grow so fast without an investment by just posting, commenting and curating, unless we have high SP accounts voting at 50% and above consistently curating our content, or we're self-upvoting with a high delegation.

Neither of those cases are likely just starting out without knowing these high SP people going in.

I personally think the investment has helped out quite a bit. But the amount of the investment will determine just how much it helps, since it's all relative. A bump up of a couple hundred SP in terms of investment isn't going to do as much as a jump of a thousand or more SP. Since I did mine incrementally, that's what I noticed.

I don't see another way to grow so fast without an investment by just posting, commenting and curating

I have to agree @glenalbrethsen which is why I'm considering investing a bit. From what I've seen with other accounts though it takes 10,000 SP to really see a big benefit and that's out of my league. That's seems to be when you get put on more curation trails and attract people voting on you for the curation rewards.

You never know though. If Steem continues to go down I might get lucky! 😂

One of the things I liked about the low Steem price was that short period where we were actually earning Steem. I never understood why that happened but it didn't last long.

I'm hoping to find some time this weekend to crunch some numbers. 😊

I wish you well with your number crunching.

I agree, it does take more SP, but I would guess there are significant advances every 1,000 or so. I think it takes time for people to know you're here, and then more time for them to see what you're doing, and then more time to decide if they're going to curate or add you to their auto vote list. As you've found with some associations you've made, finding those who appreciate what you do and how you go about it is important, and sometimes that takes getting out of Steemit and doing things in person, or on Discord, if growing faster is to be accomplished.

Ah well. I'm looking forward to making it to my first 1000 SP. Looks like Steem might on a downward trajectory so I might be able to buy some soon.

Although as you say, the associations we make, are important too and they're what will keep us going through the down times.

Discord is not really my thing, especially in a group. I dislike all that talking over each other. I can't type fast enough before everyone's already moved on. 😂

I'm not that much into Discord either. I'd rather have most conversations here. I have it for GINAbot and I've held a few private conversations. If the discussion is about Steemit or STEEM, and how it can be navigated, I'd like to have those conversations here, where all can eventually see them. I'm not much for hiding things that are good for the entire welfare. I think too many conversations like that take place on Discord.

I don't need to have many private discussion either although there have been a few times when I've chatted on Discord because the chat would have had no interest to anyone else.

I'm doing really badly at getting to bed today, actually it's already tomorrow. I'm two and a half hours late. I've been checking out hotels and things off Steemit.

anyway I really need to get to bed. i'm annoyed with myself now! Grrrrrr!

Well this is a very innovative way of giving how you did.

Yeah will less curie the number of vote would lower down due to their high number of trails behind them.

I think you still went well with yuor SP earned.

I've been doing this report ever since I started, so I could personally mark my progress. I'm happy that others are finding it interesting, too. Since I'm basically going full organic here, minus whatever bots or delegations people might send me on their own, I thought it would be appropriate to chronicle the progress for anyone following after, too.

There's plenty of different schools of thought running around this place, along with their detractors. So, since what I've been doing is the road least traveled (though I think there's more people starting to get on it), I'm hoping people can see the progress, even fairly incremental ones while I forego different aids.

I'm actually okay with the way things have been going rewards-wise the last few weeks. With you and others consistently upvoting and engaging on my posts, it's less like I'm launching things into the vastness of space and more like someone's actually out there. I appreciate that. :)

Great progress mate. Sorry I haven't been around much. But I will be around a bit more now due to some changes. I don't need to swap accounts anymore. So I'll be logged into my account all the time now. Yay!

I still don't know how you do it though. 40+ posts of actual writing. Lol I can barely scrape together 1. 😂

In my case, years of practice and a desire to do it. Things just get faster and better with time. There may also be some aptitude for it and natural ability. That's just the starting point, though. Everyone needs to improve from where they start.

I also spend a lot of time on Steemit. It's like two full-time jobs right now, but with a fraction of full-time pay.

Well, that's cool about logging in only as you. I can see you've been pretty busy with steemcleaners. You've got a healthier amount of SP (albeit largely delegated), so I'm glad of that. You've been putting your skills to bear and now you're a new witness set up and ready to go. Congratulations to you, man. I'm glad you've been finding your way.

Not everyone has to be involved in the posting, commenting and curation to make a contribution or a difference. At least not as long as things are the way they are.

100% agree with that. I'm never going to be a great content producer. But if I can do my bit to make it a better place for people who do and still get rewarded (not just with funds but with the fun of doing it). It's worth it for me. 😀

My 6 sp vote doesn't do a lot does it. Haha

But yeah steemit is a full time job for me too right now.
