Minnow #541,753—Monthly Report: October

in #steemit5 years ago (edited)

All I Can Say Is: Do It Again!

Can we just keep October, please? I know we're already eight days into November, but if we could just stay in a perpetual loop for October, I would be okay with that.

If it sounds like I'm excited about what happened last month, it's because I am, even though I know that most of my numbers aren't as good as they have been, there is one number in particular I'm pretty happy about.

Unfortunately, I'm going to be wishing I could duplicate that number over and over again, and while I might be able to, it's way to early to really be celebrating or calling things a done deal.

Is that enough of a tease yet? Yes? No? Well, I'm going to stop regardless, so we can get the show on the road.

Quick Summary

No hard fork hiccups and no weeks long recovery from surgery (though my wife did get a couple teeth pulled) means I was able to concentrate more on what I was doing, and was able to be in the right places at the right times for good things to happen.

The data itself might not indicate it as much, but some of what happened in October could probably be chalked up to the work put in throughout the year so far.

So, let's dive into the numbers.

Posts (no comments)—11

This number stays the same as it was in September (though that number may be inaccurate—doublechecking the amount, I only found 10 posts for September). What makes this number interesting is, aside from one post that received a curie, there was only one other post with a payout over $1.

I point this out because I think it proves that posts aren't necessarily the best thing to be doing with one's time. Keep that in mind as this report keeps rolling.

Comments—895

This is a 115% increase over comment output in September, which isn't saying a whole lot since September numbers were below average.

Average daily comment amount was 33.1 (based on 27 days).

Upvotes given—420/1077

The vote spread (420) is a 200% increase over September, while the vote total (1,077) is over 2.5 times what it was last month. I'm happy to see these numbers increase, particularly the vote spread, since it means I was able to get a vote out to more people.

Upvotes received—789/1342

This number split is interesting, since the vote spread is smaller than in September by 302, but the vote total is up by 4. That means a lot more repeat votes than last month.

I know this because the number of votes on the curie trail that hit one of my posts was roughly 53% less what it was in September.

SP increase—223.186

In case you couldn't tell, this is the number I've been alluding to since the beginning.

This amount is by far the singlemost highest increase in earned SP since I started. I'd like to say it was due to an amazing amount of hard work on my part, but really, it's more thanks to a combination of fortunate events, which does mean I had to be in the right places at the right times, but it also meant a lot of generosity and other things outside my control.

I will try to break down what happened in the categories that follow.

Before that, however, a side note. In last month's report, I said this:

Total earned SP since January 1, 2018 is 672.937. Unless some major things happen in the last quarter, it doesn't look like I will reach 1,000 SP. There's still time, however, so we'll see.

Well, something major happened. To get to 1,000 earned SP before 12-31-2018, I needed just over 327 more. With three months to go, that meant an average of 109 SP a month, something I had not yet done.

October's SP increase brings the total earned SP to 896.032, or just under 104 SP shy of 1,000. Now, I believe I can say, unless something goes radically wrong between now and December 31, I will reach 1,000 SP.

I'm not one to count chickens before they're hatched, but I am excited about the prospects of meeting that goal.

Highest single payout—32.098 SBD/39.618 SP

This does not constitute a record on a single payout, but it is the highest payout for any comment I have made. I happened upon a post by blocktrades talking about the issues they were having with filing taxes and asking others to tell about their own tax return horror stories. So, I did.

Though it wasn't a post, the reply was around 400 words long, and garnered a high upvote. It was not the only one, that received such an upvote, however. Many more were tapped for generous payouts on their replies, too.

I should note here, that while it was not the highest payout for October, the post that received the curie was called Grandpa Balloon Chaser. The payout on it was 10.469 SBD/12.720 SP.

Self-upvotes—0

Accident free for another month.

Contests—5

I'm currently involved in five different contests, four which involve engagement and one that rewards minnows with the highest weekly power ups.

I won the Minnow Power-Up League once. The rest of the competitions I placed between second and tenth. In all, I was awarded 30 STEEM.

While not exactly a contest, I did receive over 2 STEEM in bounties.

I also should mention that I was awarded two STEEM Monster packs for being honorably mentioned in the power up league twice.

Flags given/received—0

Not much to talk about really.

Followers—721

An increase of 37 followers from the end of September. Slowly but surely, I guess.

Reputation Rating—59

The blocktrades and curie upvotes pushed my reputation rating into 59 territory, but not enough to get me to 60. Still, without them, I'd be at 58, so very grateful to both of them for their upvotes.

Investment—0

No investments in October. The value of STEEM more or less bounced around $0.80 USD. Unless it goes significantly lower than that, below $0.50, I will not be buying any more.

Miscellaneous

The blocktrades comment, the post that was curied, and the contests accounted for nearly 135 of the 223 STEEM earned in October, leaving an additional 88 STEEM earned through regular author and curation rewards. Nearly half of that was earned through answering questions on Musing, a relatively new dApp on the STEEM blockchain I've been trying out.

I mentioned in this section of the report last month that becoming a dolphin still looked like it was pretty far away. Well, it's closer now, though I still need another 600 SP or so to get there—equal to about eight months of work prior to this. Still, I'm eager to see what I can do about narrowing that gap some more.

How, I don't know. There's just no way to count on another blocktrades scenario, not to mention when curie will strike, so that means continuing to do as well as possible in the contests and grinding out the posts, comments and curation, while trying to take advantage of whatever opportunities may arise.

ABOUT THIS POST

Here's what I was talking about @pjau. :)

Sort:

I'll add to the SP growth a little bit, not much with my half vote, but I am trying to conserve some vote power for the few comments I get so I can vote above a dust vote on them. Some nice numbers for the month. I have been playing far to much steem monsters lately.

Hey, @bashadow.

And I haven't played any, so I don't know if there's any correlation or context to that, but anyway, I appreciate the upvote and the comment. :)

It's kind of one of those perfect storm month's SP-wise. Sad thing is, STEEM either has to go way up or I have to make 10 x that a month before it becomes close to being worth much. So, perspective and relevance going on here.

It's just when I'm usually around 60-80 SP earned in a month, I get excited when it's considerably more than that. :)

I get kind of bummed every time my account balance goes over $650.00 the next time I claim some sp and sbd it goes back under 650, I have yet to figure that one out. Likely just coincidence, but I am feeling like the price reaper lately when that happens and I know I have absolutely nothing to do with the price of steem.

I'm pretty sure I do, but no one believes me, so I guess it's okay. :) I start, the prices take off like a rocket. I stick around, they plunge like a submarine. I persist, they stay in the doldrums. I'm starting to think I need to quit to save STEEM. :) Would probably have to withdraw everything, too.

You continue to show excellence here, and not accepting a modest reply from you on this. You have done a lot more than I and I feel I am in the upper echelon as far as growth here, so you are doing PHENOMENAL.

I will be stepping my writing back here as I delve back into the self publishing, but I noticed that once you begin hitting closer to 1k in SP (almost at 800 now) the quicker growth seems to come. It feels like the everyone loves a winner phenomena. So I will still do pretty good. I will still try pushing maybe one article a week until I hit 1k SP.

Can't wait to read your 1 year report. It will give everyone coming behind the knowledge that it is possible.

Hey, @practicalthought:

You continue to show excellence here, and not accepting a modest reply from you on this.

I see. :) Not sure how to respond to that then. I mean, I think I outlined pretty well how I got there. Probably 10% perspiration and 90% luck. Somebody doesn't decide to resteem blocktrade's post, I don't see it. Curie does have its requirements, but you still have to be seen. The contests I did put some time and effort into, but so did a lot of others who made more than I did in contest winnings.

Really, it's karma making up for July, August and September. :) Okay, not much into karma, per se, but anyway. The hard part is knowing it can be done and then duplicating it, but I definitely want to try. :)

223 sp. That's like triple the normal amount! 😁 and 3x less posts, so that's like 9x more. 😀

Yeah, do less, get more. Doesn't quite make sense, but I doubt I figure it out in any way that helps me to do it again, so at this point, it's mostly the outlier that I wish would become the baseline. :)

Maybe if you do 1 post this month you get 1000 SP?

howdy sir Glen! just wanted to stop by and say well done, continued growth while relaxing a bit should carry a reward in itself! I'm trying not to vote today to build up my voting power, what do you keep yours at?

Well, thanks for stopping by, @janton. Haven't seen much of you this week, but then, you've probably not seen much of me, either. :)

My voting power doesn't normally dip below 85%. I need to do a better job of spreading the votes around. It used to be harder than what it's been lately, so I need to finally adjust that, by either cranking up the vote percentages or getting to more stuff.

Not really ready to go autovote yet, but I can definitely see why people do it. I just like to manually curate, so I always know where my portion of the reward pool is going.

yeah I like the idea of autovoting but man, it seems like I'm always changing my percentages to try to keep voting, unless things change I'd have to have a ton more sp! Mine is usually around 40 to 50% so I need to be more disciplined.

I didn't do much less this week, did you? I mean as far as commenting.

No, I didn't do nearly as much with anything as I normally do. Guess I took the week off, more or less, though I was still around a lot, but it was mostly trying to keep up with what was going on, if anything. Lot of people gone for Steemfest, too.

sir Glen have you heard any good things about steemfest besides people just meeting each other? It would be nice to hear something solid.

Not really. I missed the live streaming. There didn't appear to be much of anything in depth coming out in posts that I saw. Doesn't mean there weren't any, and I didn't try to go look for any that didn't show up in my feed. I think I saw one small one from Asher, and it didn't have much of anything concrete.

But then, I'm not sure exactly what is supposed to come out of them, other than some discussion, meet and greet, and scrambling for attention by dApp creators to Steemit Inc.

I'm hoping things aren't getting decided there. I like having the discussions here.

sir Glen, are people from steemit inc. there too? I know nothing about this stuff!

Hey, @janton.

To my knowledge, ned was there, along with andrarchy, who is the content director for Steemit. Beyond that, I don't know, but my guess is, there were other supporting staff members there.

Supposedly, there were going to be different folks, mainly dApp people, hoping to get some face time with ned, but aside from some presentations and round table discussions, I'm not sure what all else went on.

I'm also hoping that anything that did come out of Steemfest that could be up for implementation will end up on STEEM first. I'm afraid there could be some desire for things to get done without it coming to the general community first, and I don't think that would be good for anyone.

Hello @glenalbrethsen, thank you for sharing this creative work! We just stopped by to say that you've been upvoted by the @creativecrypto magazine. The Creative Crypto is all about art on the blockchain and learning from creatives like you. Looking forward to crossing paths again soon. Steem on!

Well, thank you again, @creativecrypto. I'm not sure exactly how creative this was, but I'll leave you to be the judge. Thanks for doing this.

Congratulations! Your post has been selected as a daily Steemit truffle! It is listed on rank 11 of all contributions awarded today. You can find the TOP DAILY TRUFFLE PICKS HERE.

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 8 SBD worth and should receive 153 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.
