My First DTube Tshirt | DTube Steemit vs YouTube Earnings Potential

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Hello DTube and Steemians!

I received my first DTube shirt a few days ago! I am super excited I really like my new shirt! It fits really well, a little big (I got the Large and normally wear a Medium), but I love the fabric and of course it looks cool! A small way that I can help promote DTube. :) Now on to today's topic.

I want to talk about DTube and Steemit vs. YouTube as far as earning potential goes, and the basics of how you earn money on each platform.

I have been a fairly active YouTuber since November 2013. I wish I would have been more active back then, I would be much further along then I am today. Still, I have made over 220 videos, 4.5+ million views, 35k+ subscribers. I am not trying to brag, but am only using this as an illustration for earnings. That equals a ton of work over several years. I have made around $8,500 to date on YouTube from Adsense. Not very much for the time and effort that was spent on those videos. But I am not complaining. Let's dive a little deeper into YouTube.

We have all heard of people how have become millionaires from YouTube. But for every PewdiePie, there are several thousand YouTubers that don't make hardly anything. YouTube also came out with a new rule for monetization. You need to have 4,000 hours of view time, and 1000 subscribers now before you can monetize your channel. This new rule really hurt the smaller channels that were making some extra money each month. Can you make it on YouTube? Sure, you never know when a video that you make will become viral, and then it is on! But that doesn't happen very often. Or you can grind it out, and make content consistently until you can finally monetize your channel.

Monetization

When you meet the threshold you can link up your account to Adsense, then your account becomes monetize. Then adds will play before your videos, or clickable banners will show up, and when someone watches or clicks on the ad, or clicks on the banner, that counts as a monetized impression, and you earn a small amount of money on each of those. Each advertiser is willing to pay X amount per 1000 impression, this is called the CPM. The CPM will vary per advertiser, and when it is all combined you wind up with an Average CPM for your channel.

(My CPM snapshot for the last 7 days)

Then YouTube/Google takes their 40%. When all is said an done the easiest way to say it is for every 1000 views you make about $1 to $2. Because not every one of those views is going to result in a monetized impression. People like to skip ads. Also it is worth mentioning you have to meet a certain threshold before Google will pay you the balance in your account. I believe it is still $100. I think it took me a full year before I had enough to get my first payment from them. Probably would have been sooner if I was creating more content.

Other ways to make money on YouTube

There are many other ways to make money on YouTube, I won't get into them all, but some of them are Affiliate links, driving traffic to your website where you might sell merchandise, products, etc. getting paid sponsorships, to name a few. A lot of high earners on YouTube make more money from the "other ways" then they do with the Adsense. So it is quite possible to start earning money with YouTube before your account gets Monetized.

One thing that is great about YouTube is the content is always watchable and always earning, when monetized. My highest performing video which as made about half of my total revenue, is a few years old, and it is still earning!

DTube and Steemit

Here on DTube and Steemit, you can start earning from day one! You don't have to wait for you account to be monetized. With that said though you still need to be consistent and make good content. Why? Well because the way you earn money here is when people upvote your content. That upvote could be worth 1 cent, 2 cents, 10 cents, and much higher. It could take months and months before you get enough views to even make 1 dollar on your video on YouTube, here on Steemit, that time is significantly less. Again, though it is a hustle here.

How the earnings work

I won't go into all the details on how the earnings work here on DTube and Steemit. Basically everyone has Voting Power. When they upvote someone's content that content creator gets a certain amount. Then after the curation period is over (7 days) your upvoted balance gets paid to you minus the amount that goes to the people who upvoted you, since they also will share in that balance. Incentive to upvote people's content. :) There is more to it to then that, but those are the basics. There is no threshold though.

It is also worth noting that you are paid in crypto, so as the value of Steem goes up, then it is worth more. And goes down, worth less. YouTube pays in Fiat.

Final thoughts

Do you need to do one of the other? I would say no. If you are just starting out, you will make more money quicker here on DTube and Steemit, if you are being consistent, creating good content, and being interactive with others, and building up your following. But that doesn't mean you can't upload your video to YouTube as well, and start a following there with the same content. Some people don't like to do that, others only post on YouTube and then use the link here on Steemit, and that works for them. :)

I love the DTube and Steemit Platforms and am super excited to be a part of them. Whatever you decide to do have fun work hard create good content, be consistent and active, and you will make it!

I am also working on my stomach ! a lot and with no excuses !! :P

lol nice! :)

Thanks for the great explanation. Thanks for that @mrchef111 cool to know a bit more about how youtube monetization works. I think Dtube/steemit is a great place to get started and start earning right away. Awesome vid.

Thank you so much!! Yes I totally agree, DTube/Steemit is the perfect place to get started, and then if you want to branch out from there to YouTube and other places then that is cool. I have a "Maximizing Your Content" video that I will post soon. Something that I am in huge favor of.

Hi man good news for all conmunity. A hug from venezuela for you.

Thank you! I appreciate it!

I have always been confused about how the whole youtube ecosystem worked. I was never ready to try youtube at all but am loving the steemit and dtube world. It is exciting to see the transition of people like yourself to this platform.

Yeah, it has so nice being here on Steemit and DTube! Loving every minute of it as well.

Wow that's really indepth.
I also had been a "YouTuber" for a while. If you're Casey Neistat with 10 million super-engaged followers, than DTube can never match up to that. However if you're the average Joe or Jill, then DTube is head and shoulders above DTube... as long as you find the right community.

Yep exactly! My stuff will never be viral, but my top video still gets about 60 to 70k views a month. which is pretty cool. Now if everyone of my videos performed like that, it would be my career for sure. But yeah you pretty much need like 1Million plus subs for it to be your living, or at least 1Million views a month. I figure with that, you are making right around $2500 for your adsense, and then throw in some sponsors, and some patreon, and some merchandise, and affiliate links, and you are making a decent living. hahaha For the average person, DTube is where it is at for sure.

Incredible post, Matt! I prefer DTube over YouTube, but I also recognize the power that YouTube has. For example, I posted a video about Electroneum on my channel the other week, and I got over 700 views and multiple subscribers. I wasn’t even expecting that at all, and no marketing was put into place, it was all organic. I will definitely be using both platforms to grow I’m moving forward, and my home base will continue to be Steem. Steem has changed my life and I’ve never been more excited than I am right now at this point in my entrepreneurial journey ✌🏻

That is a great strategy Ken do use both! Yeah people love those crypto videos on YouTube, so I would continue to make them from time to time. That is awesome, yeah with work being really slow for me, I have been self employed for 8.5 years now, I am constantly looking for more ways to earn money, and have loved Steemit! I spend lots of time here now, and in discord. LOL

Oh, and congrats on the DTube shirt! I’ve loved mine ever since I got it a couple months back 👊🏻

That shirt looks good on you! :D

(And yes, I read the rest, but you know, numbers - I'm a visual person, so I commented on something visual ;-))

hahahaha thank you :) Yeah I would rather watch something then read it. LOL But I like to put the same information below in my post every time I do a DTube video. For those who don't like watching the videos, and would rather read. haha

Well thank you! :)

@mrchef111 thanks for the information, i will become a dtuber, we need extra money jajaja
