Review of Announcement: Steem and Morpheus announce a partnership.
I was online this morning and saw this news article about a Steem/Steemit partnership.
Morpheus Labs is excited to partner with Steemit, the team that develops the Steem blockchain protocol and steemit.com
So I researched who and what is Morpheus Labs?
Morpheus Labs simplifies the process of blockchain adoption by their clients and partners, by offering a wide range of interoperable dApp solutions across a variety of blockchain platforms.
Then I asked myself, what does this mean?
Its main product of interest to Steemit appears to be its Blockchain Platform-as-a-Service (BPaaS), which is built to help Enterprises and Developers reduce the time, cost and hopefully the pain of developing Dapps for blockchains, by gaining access to this specific Morpheus environment (BPaaS), which contains: Ruby, Javascript, and Python libraries with specific utility to blockchain Apps.
The announcement states that:
Steemit will be fully integrated into the BPaaS, meaning developers and companies can develop on the Steem blockchain through our platform by using Ruby, Javascript, and Python libraries.
Review
So the next question is, what does this news mean in plain language. Well my translation of this news is this. Software development is all about writing instructions for a computer to perform a process or function. Developing Dapps is a long process of translating the written description of the DAPP and it’s function into computer language. This means the code is an extensive translation of the DAPP creators idea into computer code, such as Ruby, Python or JavaScript. Code libraries contain translations of various functions and give you a huge advantage because you don’t have to translate every function, as many of them are common, I.e. move x units of y to here. But writing each one is painstaking and contains potential errors. Code libraries contain translations of these functions that are error free by virtue of lots of people using them and removing or correcting errors when they find them and updating the code library. So my interpretation of this partnership is that the partnership allows potential developers of Dapps for the Steem blockchain access to the code libraries for Ruby, Python or JavaScript with a lot of error free code relating to applications on the blockchain and specifically access to the code libraries developed by the developers who have worked on the Steem blockchain. So this means the partnership is attractive to developers interested in writing Dapps because they have access to a coding environment where these libraries are held, which reduces the time, cost and frustration of writing the code for their Apps. The partnership increases business opportunities for Morpheus because of the age of the Steem blockchain and low error incidence assumed to exist in its code due to error correction over time and hopefully lack of exploitable vulnerabilities. The partnership increases opportunities for Steem to see good Dapps produced on its blockchain, which add usage cases and purchases of the coin to run the Dapps.
Conclusion
The partnership with Morpheus is a positive develop-emend for the Steem blockchain and a positive partnership for Morpheus, as it increases useability for each business entity and specifically encourages the development of use cases for the Steem blockchain. Which is of course the “Holy Grail” of blockchains, giving people applications they need, which are run on your blockchain as one way to increase the value of your cryptocurrency. It’s one of the things which makes Ethereum’s Ether valuable.
