- The Quest for Reputation -

The Steemit network is quite young, and is constantly on boarding new users to this amazing platform. I want to give a brief description of what that number next to your name is for those that are new and somewhat new to the Steemit platform. The number next to your name starts at 25, and can quickly climb a few points if you begin to engage on the Steemit network by posting, commenting and replying. That number is your reputation score on Steemit, and as long as you adhere to some Steemit basics of not plagiarizing, spamming, scamming or being detrimental to Steemit or others on Steemit, then your reputation score should climb higher as you participate, but it will get harder to increase reputation with each increase. For example, going from a reputation of 29 to 30 will be much harder than when going from 28 to 29.

Your Steemit reputation number can also go down and even wind up in the negative below zero. It is important to avoid harming your reputation. Like in real life, character will determine your reputation, so to on Steemit. It is important that you care what other think of you while on Steemit, because that will ultimately determine your success here on Steemit. Please don't let others on Steemit fool you into thinking you can buy your reputation because while you can pay for up votes from Steemit accounts with higher reputation numbers, this will only work up to a certain point before it becomes very expensive. The best way to increase your reputation is by following the Steemit basics, by posting your own material, and truly engaging with others on this platform. Please don't think that by commenting "good job" or "nice artwork" or other generic statements is engaging, it is more spammy than anything and will not help you but hurt you.

I tried to find more material on reputation in the Steemit white paper but there wasn't much there in regards to user reputation. I found these posts by other Steemit users that might interest you if you want more of the technicals behind Steemit reputation.

I consider these must reads:

Illustrated Guide to Steemit Reputation by @sndbox This is a good article that somewhat simplifies how reputation works on Steemit. It also helps clear up some misconceptions about Steemit reputation by @sndbox

After reading these articles on Steemit reputation, you will have a better understanding of why it is important to cherish and protect your reputation while nurturing its growth on this quest we call Steemit.

Reputation is everything in life, it helps us show the kind of conduct and life we lead and how people value is as a result of that.

I think ever since bid-bots became a thing , the reputation itself lost value overall. I grinded my ass off to get a good rep, still, nobody cares to click on my cute posts:) lol Okay man have good one!

Reputation is something very important to me in real life and here in Steemit, it is our business card as we could say out there. I would love to get to the "70" because most accounts at that level are quite successful, it is also the highest step of the community. Once you start to show that your content is original and comes from you, improving is fast.

Obviously we still have a long way to go as each level is much longer than the previous one, but this is not about a race, this is about demonstrating your contribution to the members here and the people who read you. It's about gaining confidence, gain followers, win the attention of all kinds of people to see that you upload content or comment in a prominent way.

Great info about Reputation @streetstyle, being a minnow I know how hard it is to get noticed without at least 50-55+ reputation. I am working so hard to increase my reputation points, post like this will definitely help us more, thanks for sharing.

@Vsrsatish yes it can be hard to get noticed. It usually is a combination of things such as your content, your engagement with others here on the steemit platform, consistency and time. There are other factors but these are significant on Steemit. The hardest one to overcome in my opinion is Time. Good luck and don't give up.

indeed,
Worry more about your character than your reputation. Character is what you are, reputation merely what others think you are.

upvoted

That's the way it should be.

And that is why you have a 7.

Yeh, Absolutely right... I appreciate you
We should be more concerned with your character than our reputation, because our character is what we really are, while our reputation is merely what others think we are.
#upvote done

Don't take it easy, if you want to gain this reputation in a valid way, like creating content and getting upvotes from the community, you can also be got them by commenting on other's profile. from 25 to 32 you just need to get 1 sbd upvotes. and then from 37 it got more complex and hard, There is another way to increase your reputation which is getting upvotes from bid votes!

upvoted your post.

Yeah i also agree with you sir @streetstyle.
Like in real life, character will determine your reputation, so to on Steemit grrat work.
Thanks for sharing.

I didn't know that my reputation could go down... I suppose this happens when someone flags you. Could a reputation increase to more than 70? I think I've never seen a higher one, thanks for this post!! :)

Hello @adrianachenille And yes, reputation can increase past 70. The highest I know of is 80 but I won't say who since he is a questionable character here on Steemit.
As for going below zero with reputation, @berniesanders had that happen to him, but his rep. score has since recovered...amazing. Read about it Here
