How to set goals for yourself - Tips for teens

in #steemiteducation5 years ago

Whatever we decide to do in live, be it school work, going to a college or university after school, or taking part in sports, we need to set some goals for ourselves.

If we do not have goals, we do not know what we want to achieve and where we want to go with our lives.

Setting goals can be tricky, because we can sometimes set unreachable goals for ourselves. Lets look at a few tips on how we can do this.

The first important thing that you need to remember when setting a goal for yourself is to be realistic.  This does not mean you must not push yourself to achieve the best you can do or become, but do not set goals for yourself that you know you will not be able to reach.  This will just make you loose hope.  Sometimes it is better to start off with smaller goals and first reach them before going on to bigger ones.  Like for instance, you are very unfit.  It will be better to set a goal to start practicing and run a mile, than saying I want to run a marathon.  You will eventually get there, but first start by reaching your smaller ones than doing nothing at all in the end.

Your brain will take time to get used to new ideas and you becoming into the habit of doing something, so stick to your new decisions and keep on working towards your goals.  It is much easier to get use to a bad habit than a good one, so if you want to reach your goals, you will have to continue trying and working and eventually it will become a habit that you will do without thinking about it.

You need to keep on reminding yourself of your goal.  If you want to write down your goals and read it every day to yourself do that, so that you will get use to the idea and it will 'stick' in your brain.  That way you will not give up to reach the goal you have set out to do.

A big mistake that some teenagers make is they set goals for themselves to please others, like their parents.  It is a good thing to keep your parents happy and make them proud of you, but at the end of the day, these goals must be your desires that you want to reach.  Not because you think you will be in trouble if you do not do it.  Once we believe in ourselves and we do things to better ourselves, it becomes important and we will try harder.  Be in competition with yourself, nobody else.

Going through life is not always 'smooth sailing'.  Things happen and sometimes we have to deal with failures or mistakes.  Do not be the type of person who just gives up the first times things do not go your way.  Running into 'road bumps' teaches us things like have determination to do better the next time.

So set your goals and work towards it.  Some will come easy and some will need work.  Some will be reached in a short period of time and some will take longer, but if you 'just keep swimming' like Dory, you will eventually get there.

Do not be a quitter, be a person who shows life what you are made of.
