In America and across the world different holidays are celebrated - we will gather information on it.  Since we are now in June we will start off with holidays celebrated in June and the first one we will look at is 'Flag day'.

Lets look at some interesting information on the American Flag and this day celebrated on June 14.

When the 'American Revolutionary War' was taking place, Congress decided that the country needed a flag that represented all the united colonies.

On June 14, 1777 the Second Continental Congress passed a Flag Resolution. This day is still celebrated as Flag Day in the United States.

They said that the flag would have 13 stripes (alternating between red and white) and in the corner there would be 13 white stars on a piece of blue.  They did not have precise specifications, so there were different versions.

There is a story that is told that says a lady named Betsy Ross was the first person to sew a flag from a picture that George Washington drew.  Nobody can verify if this is a fact or a myth.

A few of the changes that took place over the years concerning the flag

  • The number of the stripes and the stars became 15 now  (1749)
  • Specific specifications were given on what the flag must look like  (1912)
The stars would be in six horizontal rows of eight each with a single point of each star to be pointing upward.
  • The pattern of the stars changed to 7 rows of 7 stars each  (1959)

The flag are also called by a few nicknames like

  1. 'Star spangled banner'
  2. 'Stars and stripes'
  3. 'Old glory'

A flag is very important to a country.  It is a symbol that you need to be proud of.  The American people is also proud of their flag since many people have died for the freedom of their country and the flag also represent and honors that.

There are very important rules which we have to follow when handling a flag like for instance the flag may never touch the ground and if it is put up at night, it must be lit up.

Have a look at the video to learn more about the etiquette of handling the flag.
