If you are 'independent', it means that you are on your own and you follow your own rules and you look after yourself.  America use to be under the rule of Great Britain, but on the 4th of July 1776 the "Declaration of Independence" was approved and America could rule themselves - they were not 'owned' by any other country.

The Americans celebrate this day every year and refers to it as 'Independence day'.

It is a huge celebration that most Americans take part in.  They will visit friends and make food or have a barbecue and many people will attend firework displays or even have their own fireworks set off at their homes.

On this day, the people are extra proud to be part of their country and the are very patriotic.  To be patriotic means you will look at the flag and feel proud, you will sing the anthem and feel proud and you will just have a general feeling of being proud of your country.  A lot of people will wear red. white and blue.

Many bands play patriotic songs like The Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, and God Bless America.

Most of these celebrations will take place outdoors because it is summer and their will also be some parades with bands, baseball and picnics.  All and all just a fun day for the whole family.

About 500 000 people gather every year in Washinton DC on the capitol lawn and listen to music and watch fireworks.

When independence was declared there were about 1.5 million people living in America, but today there are more than 300 million people that live in this country of 'freedom and opportunity'.

A very interesting fact -  John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both presidents and signers of the Declaration of Independence, died on the 50 year anniversary on July 4, 1826. President James Monroe also died on July 4th and President Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4th.

  • For some extra information you can read more here.  You can also do some extra research of your own and find a few ideas on how you can celebrate this day.

A lot of fun goes on on this day and while some people are taking part in the 'Peachtree Road race' in Atlanta, there are other people taking part in hot dog eating contents.  There is no wrong way to celebrate this day, except when you are not proud of your country and having some fun.

Have some fun on the coming independence day in July and you can even decorate your own t-shirt to wear on this festive day.
