Holidays people celebrate Part 6 - Bastille Day - Information for Gr 1-3

in #steemiteducation6 years ago

A lot of people in France were not happy with what was going on and on the 14th of July 1789 the stormed the Bastille to free the prisoners (the Bastille was the name of the prison).

The poor people were standing together and showing everybody that they were unhappy with the way they were treated.

This was the start of the 'French Revolution'.

They stormed the prison and took it over and three years later the French Republic was formed and the people all started living a better life.

So now this day is celebrated every year in France and also in some other countries and especially by French speaking people living in other countries.

It is the French National day and is called La Fete Nationale in France.

The '14th of July' or 'Bastille Day' is a national holiday in France and there are a lot of activities and fun going on.  The most well known event is the 'Bastille Day Military Parade'.  It takes place in Paris and while lots of people take place in it, even more people watch it.

Today the parade runs down the Champs-Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde. At the end of the parade the French President and many foreign ambassadors wait and greet the military.

A lot of people also go on picnics, join festivals, listen to music, watch dance and firework displays.

Some more things to know about Bastille day are that in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in America there are also festivities going on and it lasts four days.  They have a replica of the Eiffel tower that is 43 feet high.

Lots and lots of people attend the festivities in Paris and in 1979 one of the events had more than a million people.

The Bastille was not a very big prison.  It could only hold about 50 prisoners at a time, and even though the peasants (the poor people) storming the prison believed that they would free many people, there were only 7 prisoners in there at the time.

There is a very famous bicycle tour (Tour de France) that takes place over Bastille day, so this is another activity that people like to do and that is to watch the tour passing through the different towns.

These people that stormed the Bastille so many years ago, believed in a better life and also that you can do more if you stand together.  They were right, and every year the people now celebrate and honor these brave people and the change they brought to France.
