On the fourth Sunday of July a day called 'Parent's day' is celebrated by some people.  It is a combination of Mother's and Father's day and it is to make the people aware of how important parents are as part of a family.

This is not an official holiday in America but is still celebrated by people who want to tell their parents what a huge role they play in their lives and that they appreciate them.

Parents do not have to be your biological parents.  It can be foster, adoptive or just an aunt, uncle, grandparents.  Anybody who plays a role in raising you.  This is the day when you can thank them, and show them your love, but do not only limit it to this day.  All parents deserve respect and needs to know from time to time how much you appreciate them.

The government celebrates by planning family activities and taking the time to point out how important strong parents are to the community. There is a Parent's Day council that awards the Parents of the Year which are chosen from outstanding parents nominated by each state.

Any parents that make a commitment to their family, gives them unconditional love and puts their family first and have overcome some obstacles may be nominate for 'parent of the year.'

You can make a nice card for you parents, cook them some food, go with them on a walk or do anything they enjoy.

Remember, parents always put you first and worries about you being happy, so on this day it is their turn to do what they like and be spoiled without worrying.

Besides from being treated on this day, it is also a day where parents realize once again what an important work they have and they 'dedicate' themselves again to promise that they will be the best parents they can be.

The day became a national observance in the United States in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed it into law. A number of groups worked together to get the day made official.

If you would like to learn more on the process of making something a law, you can read here.

Many other countries also have a parent's day or family day where they celebrate how important strong families are.

  • Write a few sentences about your parents, what they do for you and why you think they are the best in the world.
  • Decide on what you can do to surprise them to say thank you for what they do for you and to celebrate Parent's day with them.  You can do anything like practicing a dance, singing a song, making them cookies or food.... use your imagination.
