They are so small, but they are very important little animals.  They can also be scary and buzz around your head and can sting you.  Do you know what animal I am referring to?

Yes that is right.  I am talking about bees.

It is very sore when they sting you, but a bee will only sting you when they feel they are in danger and you threaten them.

Even though we can be scared of them, we need to understand that bees are very important to us.

If you look inside a flower, you will see a substance called pollen.  This pollen is needed to make a new flower.

Sometimes the wind will blow the pollen from one flower to another, but we also need insects like bees to carry the pollen from one flower to another.

The bees are called pollinators, which means they help to spread the pollen from one plant to another.  They take the pollen from the male part of the plant to the female part of the plant so that the plant will reproduce.(make baby plants)

The bee will sit on the flower and while he is sucking the nectar, to go and make some honey, the pollen will get stuck to its body and in special 'pockets' on its legs.

Some of the pollen will be carried over to the next flower, and they will pollinate the flower and some of the pollen will be taken to the nest.

Bees help with the pollination of a lot of plants which will form new flowers and then fruits and different crops.

Bees help with making our planet beautiful and giving us a lot of flowers and making nature attractive.

Bees are very hard workers and even if you are scared of them, we owe them a lot of thanks and must protect them.

  1. There are many types of bees.  Find out what types of bees we get and which different 'jobs' do bees have inside the hive.
  2. Why are bees important?
  3. What is the stuff called inside the flower which is passed on to another flower?
  4. Can you explain the word 'pollination'?
  5. Are you scared of bees? Why or why not.
  6. Choose any 5 words from the reading piece and use it in your own sentences.
  7. For extra reading and information, you can read more on why bees are important http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/why-bees-are-important-to-our-planet/
  8. Watch the video on how pollination takes place through bees.
