Photos and cameras and video cameras has changed a lot over the last years. Just speak to you parents or grand parents and they will tell you, not everybody had cameras, we did not have cellphones with cameras, some cameras did not have build in flashes, we used a film that you had to go and develop and you could not see before the time what your photo looked like... you had one chance and hoped for the best.

Things have changed a lot with photography.  Lets learn more about it.

The Ancient Greeks and Chinese used an optical device called the ‘camera obscura’ to project an image of the surroundings on to a screen. This invention played an important role in the development of cameras and photography.

There were a few types of designs earlier but it was only by the 1800 that more practical cameras were designed which people could actually use more easily.

The 'Kodak' camera was on sale in 1888 and it was the beginning of the use of film.  This was a box camera with a single shutter speed and a lens that could not be turned.

Oscar Barnac was a German engineer that developed the first camera that used a 35mm film. In 1925 after a few more developments, it was being sold and used,

In 1948 people were very excited about the 'Polaroid' camera (you actually now get it again).  You take a photograph and the snapshot comes out of the camera and in a few seconds it is developed and you have your photo.

In 1949 the technology was already there for a disposable camera but this only caught on in 1990 when Kodak made one and people started enjoying taking it on vacations, using it ones, developing the film and disposing of the camera in other words throwing it away.  It was also very popular at birthdays and wedding where you could put some on the tables and everybody could use it.

In 1991 Kodak released the first digital camera.  As you can see, Kodak which is still around today, played a huge role in the development of cameras.

Watch the video and answer the questions.

  2. Why was photography not easy in those days?
  3. Where did Eastman do a lot of his experiments?
  4. What did his camera in 1885 include?
  5. How did Eastman decide on the name 'Kodak'?
  6. How much did the brownie camera cost?
  7. Why did Eastman get inactive?
  8. How did he die?
