The weather Part 2 - Clouds - General information, questions and an experiment for kids Gr 2-4

in #steemiteducation6 years ago

Look up in the sky and some days you will see clouds.  Different shapes and sizes will drift past and when they all pack together and turn grey, they chances that it will rain is very good.

You learned about the water cycle earlier and you know that the water evaporates from earth and turns into water vapour.  In the atmosphere it condenses and turn back into water drops and it is when these water drops pack together that clouds are formed.

When the clouds gets too heavy with all the water droplets, it will fall to earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or snow.  This is called precipitation and it comes from the clouds.

Clouds can contain millions of tons of water.

Depending on where they form and how they are formed, clouds will differ from one another.  The main types of clouds are stratus, cirrus and cumulus clouds.

There are many variations of these 3 main cloud types including stratocumulus, altostratus, altocumulus, cirrostratus and cirrocumulus.

Lets have a look at the different clouds.  Listen carefully and answer the questions.

  1. Why can you 'see' your breathe on cold days?
  2. What is water vapour?  When will a cloud form?
  3. What type of cloud looks like a cotton ball and what will you know when you see these clouds.
  4. Where will you find the cirrus clouds, what is it made of?
  5. When does fog form?
  6. What cloud will bring rain or snow?
  7. What type of cloud will bring thunderstorms?

Would you like to make your own cloud?  Watch the video and try the experiment.
